Array East Coast Fencing Hey all,
I'm considering a move over to the east coast, specifically Northern New Jersey. Have to decide by Monday, 7 October. Could any of you on the east coast give me some advice on fencing there, (Floor Fees, Memberships, Clubs, Etc). Especially good sabre fencing. If any of you happen to live in NJ, please e-mail or PM me... I need some good advice.
Thanks,

Array There's hardly any sabre fencing in that area of the country, at least any GOOD fencing. I mean, the closest big city to Nothern Jersey is NEW YORK, and we KNOW there's no sabre there.... Complete waste of time to try moving to that area of the country.

-B I hope you are being facetious. At the Division I Men, last year, 4 of the top 6 were Metro New York and 1 from New Jersey, 4 more Metro in the top 16 and many more in the top 32 with some New Jersey and South Jersey also. I did see 1 from New England in the bottom half of the top 32. If 5 of the top 6 are not good, then there is no good sabre fencing in the United States. The women only had 2 top 8 from Metro and 2 top 16 from New Jersey. But the Women of New England did do better than their Men as they had 2 in the top 32.
I have not been to any of the clubs, so I do not have specific information, but I would check the USFA web site under Info for Members, Clubs and Divisions and look up New Jersey. You might also check out Peter Westbrook Foundation, New York Athletic Club, and the Fencers Club, considering they have dominated Sabre fencing in the United States for the past 100 years. They all have web sites and can be found in the USFA web site for the New York Metro. Donald Hollis Clinton, Jr. DHCJr@juno.com

Array Still not sure about moving there. I just did the research on asbestos levels in lower NY and New Jersey. Think asbestos lung is worth moving out there? Still scared. Don't take life so seriously... You'll never live through it. -

I'm sorry, I didn't realise it wasn't obvious. Seemed like an appropriate response to someone wondering about the quality of the sabre in the area....

nyc clubs without getting quite as caustic as my friends and former teammates who have already replied to your post, if you are at all able to get into NYC, and are serious about fencing sabre, then there are 2 places to be. either the new york athletic club which is on central park south and fences sabre t/r/f/s, or the new york fencers club which is on w23rd st. and fences sabre almost every night. these are 2 of the most dominant clubs in the country, and are definitely worth going to. -

-m There is no oiuyt, who came 33rd and in the profile there is no reference that he is Bradley Baker. So how am I or anyone suppose to know.
Also, if somebody, knew about the strong fencing in New York and New Jersey, why would they have asked.
I was trying to give a constructive answer, even though I am not from that area, nor am I a Sabre fencer.
If I offended anyone, I am sorry, but I try not wasting anyone time and I always let people know who I am, because I stand behind what I say. Donald Hollis Clinton, Jr. DHCJr@juno.com

What do you mean you didnt know it was Bradley Baker. .. every one knows that oiuyt = brad!!!
please note... this was supposed to be humorous... but i've just spent 8 hours staring at mutual fund statements ... so it in fact may not be... please excuse -

Array I'm sorry I didn't know. But I did notice one thing, all the indivduals who state that they know him, all come from MA. I am from the other side of the country, and I have only been on this web site a few months and I believe there are almost 2000 who have profiles. I know 3 of the top 4 in both finals of the Division I Sabre, but unless they are on the west coast or someone like Steve Mormando, I probably would not know them.
I have found many more fencers, know me than I know them, because I am an Armorer. But there are probably many who do not know who I am.
Now I know who oiuyt, but there are probably others out there who do not. Donald Hollis Clinton, Jr. DHCJr@juno.com

NYAC sabre coach etropolski is a gold medalist in olympics; its very expensive.
fencers club is on 25th street not 23(fencersclub.com). i fenced there over the summer and it was great being able to compete, and learn with peter westbrook who goes on wendsday evening. the sabre guys are very cool too. Definitely go to fencers club if you get a chance. -

you're right about the FC, my bad... i was thinking of the subway stop i get off at when i go there.
as for the AC, Etropolski is my coach, and is really quite good. he coaches for the love of the sport rather than for $$, and the AC is willing to let people come and train for free so long as you talk to the folks there and let them know you are interested. compared to the $500 or so a year price tag on the FC, and the $30 or so per lesson there, i would call the AC quite a bargain.
regardless, they are both great clubs, and you really can't go wrong with either one. hope that helps! -
