| Well, if Jeff (not Jerry, BTW) isn't 16, then someone should notify the USFA, since he's signed up for the Cadet NAC in South Carolina next month : ) |

| Top Juniors Donald,
The reason the top juniors are not going to Orlando is because it is a cadet/div 2 and div 3 meet.
Anyone over 16 or with a B or higher cannot fence in it.

| As Eric said, the money is a nice extra if you're of the caliber to be able to expect to have a shot at it, but I doubt it's why many people attend. Most go because it's well run, it's big ( ie you get lots of fencing ), the experience against different people and the opportunity to fence top-notch competitors. That's why I went, anyway. The sabre was 57 people; my Division is lucky to get five at a tournament. Hard to improve in that sort of a situation.
Add decent directing. OK, so we had to self-direct some of the sabre pools, but hey, Ed Korfanty, Derek Cotton, and the Puerto Rican Team coach for the DE's is hard to top, especially for those of us now excluded from Div I and fencing As or Bs....
Oh, and locker rooms complete with shower facilities on-site! No more flying or driving home sweaty and nasty because you checked out of your hotel already...
And I have to say, a more...informal atmosphere than most NAC's, which can feel a bit like an assembly line... |

| Well, I don't know about the "more fencing". A pool of six or seven is a pool of six or seven whether there's twenty-five fencers or one-hundred-twenty-five fencers.
If you're so-so and expect to lose in your first round of DE, then you'll get your six plus one DE bouts in regardless of the size of the tournament.
And if you're the best, you may get one more DE bout than otherwise. If there were 60 fencers and you're seeded #1, then you have a bye in the round of 64, going into 32. So, if you win, you fence five DE bouts.
If there were 120 fencers (double the number), and you're seeded #1, you skip the round of 128 going into 64. You then fence six bouts to win it. That's one more bout for twice the number of competitors. So you're not really getting so many more bouts because there's more fencers there.
But, you're more likely to meet a wide variety of different fencers, which is good in itself, being able to see different styles of fencing.

Inq...did I check any of your gear at the table? (meanign, did I fail any of your body cords?) I was in the white t-shirt on the 2nd day, and a Sacramento nationals shirt the first.
Did you watch the gold medal sabre between Ilan Chernov and Joshua Runyon? There was one exchange where Chernov forced Runyon back to his 2 meter line, then Josh started pressing Ilan all the way to the other end, finishing with a HUGE flunge and nailing Chernov. As Josh waslked back to his en garde line, I called out "I thought you were Navy, not Air Force!" |

Anyone over 16 or with a B or higher cannot fence in it. | I did make the mistake, I meant our top Cadets. Some are going, but there are others who are not. Thank you for catching my typo.

| i fenced 2 de's in the last hawaii open, i didn't win the first and i didn't understand why i had to fence the second de, it seemed redundant, but i enjoyed the bouts, as they fulfilled my expectations of 'more fencing'. |

No, you were there but the grumpy guy with the beard checked all my stuff... Quote: | Did you watch the gold medal sabre between Ilan Chernov and Joshua Runyon? | Oh, yeah, I watched all of the final bouts.
Say, Sam, any idea what became of the third A in the sabre? I think it was Krul, but there are only the two shown on the results page of the LBI page, and only one in the top half of the standings, which I think had to change the rating of the event, yes? |

| Craig Bansmer, the organizer, told me that Krul was disconsolate because he wasn't accepted into Stanford. So he moped instead.

| I finished ninth. I lost to Jerry Chang, the Hong Kong/USC guy. Chang's a decent fencer and has fairly good stuff. However, I felt I could have beaten him but for two main factors:
1) I didn't have a good feel for the floor: shoes were slipping on the floor in the East Gym (everyone has a wet rag next to the strip, but even that's not enough when your shoe's a bit worn out, like mine).
2) The refereeing. I was just livid. And others watching nearby were equally astounded at some of the calls. Basically, I was limited to a fully extended arm before commencing an attack. (But that didn't apply to the other person.) My parries were his beats, etc.

You know what? I did see the last half of this bout. Jerry is the kid with the red lame right? Well edew I don't remember seeing you slip but then again sometimes those things are so slight that spectators woun't be able to pick it up. As for the bad calls by the director....yes.... I did see that. I think that you lost atleast 4 points because of this. One of them was when Jerry fleched you and you were able to parry and then hit him as he passed. Director gave the point to him because he said that it was jarry's beat attack. Also at one point you hit Jerry with one straight hit but the director said that you didn't have right of way because he took your blade. I didn't see or hear it. The rest of the points you lost were right of way stuff that you can't argue with.
Jerry is a really fast really good fencer but I felt he leans too much and was a bit over commited in his attacks. But none the less he is an outstanding fencer (especially for his age.) I think you are the more experienced and technical fencer though.
Well theres always next time. |

| No, I didn't really slip. But the floor was slippery nonetheless (hey, it's been slippery since I fenced there in college [against CSULB], 20 years ago). With a slippery floor, it made quick direction changes difficult. It prevents one from making an attack when the opportunity arises: the opening is there, but there's no traction to propel the lunge. So, the only way to make attacks that work is to set up the situation with (physical) momentum moving your way, and then completing the attack. What happens with a slippery floor is that one can't push on a compound attack. If I make an attack and the opponent retreats, there's a counter-move -- a long-distance attack -- that works. But with little traction, I had to give it up, and so the opponent takes over the right of way.
But the referee would not see that. He claimed each time that my advance part of my advance lunge was a preparation. All I did was advance-lunge with a simple extension. I don't need to complete my extension, mainly because the other guy's counter-attacking, and I have no need to plunge my blade into the guy, or break my blade (one broke, by the way, because it got so bent out of shape from having to fully extend, that when I straightened it out, it broke).
I thought Jeffrey (not Jerry) was a very balanced fencer, with very quick hands.
Oh well.
