The ratings are associated with USFA (United States Fencing Association) members (http://www.usfencing.org)

First, you get a membership with USFA ... and at USFA tournaments you can acquire a rating if you do well.

    Ratings are: U, E, D, C, B, A ... U means unrated

And of course, as you might suspect, an 'A' fencer is higher rated than a 'C' fencer.

So if someone says they have a rating of D09 in sabre...it means that they earned a 'D' rating in 2009 in sabre. You can have different ratings for each weapon.

But don't take ratings *too* seriously, as there are U's that destroy A's. It's not any real way to measure the skill of a fencer.

That's not entirely true - you line up a hundred A fencers and a hundred E fencers and I think you could pretty accurately predict how that situation is going to go down.

Of course people beat people of higher ratings all the time - but I think an A is pretty reliable assesment of one.s ability.

I am rated M in all weapons.

(M = More awesome than everyone else, ever - period.)

((shortened from the original rating of MATEEE-P.)

As a fencer from over the pond, where we don't have a rating system, I am curious to know whether in the US there are tournaments for people of a certain rating (C only for instance) or a range of ratings (E-C for example)?

This would seem like a good idea, since it would allow people to progress competitively as their skills develop, rather than getting a mashing at their first competition.

    Thanks,

    G

some events are ratings restricted, the most common ones being restricted to newer fencers, i.e. D & under and similar. higher level events are restricted to people with higher ratings.

Yep, that happens all the time. C and under, e-c, U only, etc.

Or is U an actual designation?

If you're not a USFA member, you have no rating (NR), but it isn't relevant because you're never in a USFA competition.
