    Tournament Locations

OK what do you guys think about where the USFA puts the tournaments?
For the upcoming tournament in Orlando the home of Disney world, don't you think that it should be NAC youth?

    Thoughts anyone?

Let me ask my kids? Orlando after new year or Saratoga Springs in the Winter? Though choice!

yes Saratoga is lovely in the winter, if you like pounding blizzards and negative temperatures.
Why not tampa bay for goodness sakes?

From what I hear, the USFA puts tournaments in places during the offseason. Example: Summer Nationals, Austin, Txas. People go to Austin in the winter more then in the summer, so the cost is cheaper for people going. It is almost asd if the USFA cares for it's fencers?

Not only is it cheaper for the fencers, it is cheaper for the USFA as well. That is why you will probably never see a NAC in NYC or Boston. There are never cheap venues available.

I agree with you Psycho!! Disney would be good for the whole family!! Having a meet for cadets and the Divisions is no fun at all except of course for those lucky ducks who are going to it.
Last winter when my kids flew off to Saratoga I flipped out. It was snowing, Atlanta was snowed in, it was snowing in Saratoga!! Just plain dangerous.
I've heard the reasoning behind going to cheaper vs more expensive locations but sheesh!! Hot is ok but cold just sucks. Texas is um Texas.... :::Shudders::::
It is 4am and I cannot sleep so if it seems like I am rambling, that could be accurate!

Snow is not quite the destructive juggernaut you seem to think it is....

Being an epee fencer it would take you five minutes to notice the airplane had crashed.....
If snow is not such a juggernaut, why do they close airports?
Why are there so many delays?? How come people spend days sleeping on the concourses in Denver??

First of all, there AREN'T "so many delays". Snow delays are a rarity. they just get a lot of coverage when they happen.

however, I guess I can see your point.... a similar point can be made about hurricanes, so I guess we shouldn't risk those either.... matter of fact, lets just not hold events during hurricane season or winter. thats, what, about mid august to the end of march? but, hey, for april to mid august, we are all good.

So you are insulted or seem to be by my saying that I am scared to send my kids in an airplane:
    1. When it is snowing like crazy outside.
    2. When the likelihood of snow someplace like UPSTATE NY in January is about an 80% chance. ETC.
Flying into a place with a more moderate climate is easier on my head. I am a mother. Flying makes me nervous.
Obviously if my kids are fencing in meets all over the country they are fencing in meets all over the country. It is a fact of fencing. If they want to fence that is what is necessary.
Making a discussion of the weather as an either or situation is just plain epeeish.

First of all, let me just clarify that I am not "insulted" by your apparent fear of snow. I am somewhat entertained by it, just as I am entertained whenever I see our nations capital shut down over a dusting of snow. If you are nervous about flying, that is one thing. however, to suggest, as you did, that winter NACs should be in warmer climates because snowy weather is "downright dangerous" ignores the fact that the main effect snow has on air travel is delays. These delays are rare, and crashes due to weather are even more rare: well less than 1 per year. Though it may emotionally cause you in particular to worry, it is NOT a significant statistical concern, and thus does not justify raising the cost of NACs by sending them to more expensive venues. As has been pointed out, using locations during their natural off season is a way of keeping costs down, which I for one appreciate.

btw, I am confused about something: when you say 80% chance of snow, are you talking about the forecast on the particular weekend of the NAC last year, or in general? If the former, then I must point out that the forecast was unavailable at scheduling time. if the latter, I must point out that it does NOT snow 80% of the time in upstate NY. there is frequently snow already on the ground, but that does not affect travel, as runways and roads will be clear. the bottom line is that it is not enough of a factor to be worth raising costs.
Making a discussion of the weather as an either or situation is just plain epeeish.
What is with this penchant your family seems to have for making all this about weapons? is it, as it appears, simply an immature and inflammatory tactic designed to distract the conversation from my logical points, or your lack thereof? I mean you don't see me saying that it is just like a sabreur to be unable to handle a few delays......

I believe the USFA tries to move the NAC location around from East Coast,West Coast and Central US to make things fair travel-wise to everyone. Venue costs of holding a tournament is the other major factor.
