| NFL...the 2009 season...for Matt K Well, last year I started the NFL thread on Feb 9. I guess I'm late this year. So far, we've heard that Favre is retiring, Cassel has been franchised, Mangina was fired by a sad team and hired by a pathetic one, and countless other sacks, shuffles and placements have been made.
What are the really compelling storylines to you? |

| Being from Wisconsin, I cant help but comment on Favre. He's retired twice now, and he's been whining about it for years. Personally, I'm wondering where he'll get traded next. |

And Illinois? Isn't that a little harsh? |

Personally, I'm wondering where he'll get traded next. | I'm pretty sure he's actually done this time. Last time he had just come off a pretty good season and took the Packers to the NFC Championship game. It was reasonable for him to think he could still compete at a very high level. This season, while he started off fairly strong, he fell off the face of the earth the last part of the season and really hurt his team. He knows he sucks now.
Personally, I think he is a fairly overrated quarterback, though still very good.

| I don't think he was overrated, because for a long time he was the best there was. I think he just didn't want to admit that he's getting too old to play at that level. As far as I'm concerned, he's the best there ever was while he was with the Packers. (Jets Favre isn't the real Favre.)

(Jets Favre isn't the real Favre.) | There is no way you can argue Brett Favre was the best quarterback in the history of the game. He's tied for 20th all time in passer rating, he has the most interceptions with 310 (granted with the most touchdowns[464], but a huge part of being quarterback is protecting the ball and not making mistakes) for a measly 1.4:1 TD:INT ratio. He's been very very good, but you can't even make the "he's a winner" case, because he only won one Super Bowl). People love the way he played the game and that's why some people think he's somewhere near the Top 5. But in all honesty, it's a bad way for a QB to play that he just did at an insanely high level. Not saying he sucked in any way, or was even close to mediocre, but he's still vastly overrated.

| I'm not saying he had the best numbers, and I know very well how many interceptions he had. But having watched every game he's ever played with the Packers, I'm convinced that there are very few quarterbacks around that were as fun to watch as him.

But I don't want the "most fun to watch" QB leading my team, I want the one that puts me in the best position to win.

| That's a valid point. Especially having no rooting interest in the Pack...because either way, it's a win-win.

| I just want Favre to go away. I like him, but I'm sick of all the freaking drama. I hope this retirement is for good.
Honestly, I hope Eric Mangini does well in Cleveland. He got a raw deal with the Jets. After taking the team to the playoffs twice, he was saddled with an aging quarterback he didn't want and fired because that QB couldn't win. Shouldn't the GM have fired himself for making that move?
Turning to more local events, I want the Buffalo Bills to pay someone to babysit Marshawn Lynch. The running back has gotten into problems with the police twice in the past eight months. The first time, he hit a woman with his car and drove away. The woman wasn't seriously hurt, just nudged with the car in an intersection. Lynch then refused to cooperate with the investigation, even after the police discovered it was his car. The Bills intervened, and he got let off with a warning. More recently, Lynch was found with a loaded gun sitting on the front seat of his car while he was driving. The Bills once again went to bat for their halfback and got him off with a slap on the wrist.

The Bills stepping in and getting him let off with slaps on the wrist will do nothing to change his behaviors - it simply enables them - entrenching the mentality that someone else will take care of his ****-ups and that he has no level of personal responsibility.
A loaded gun - well at least it was in the front seat - he learned something from the Plaxco fiasco.
Until the NFL gets serious about a code of conduct, and enforcing penalties that might actually deter the players - or hell just letting the law take care of the players - this nonsense will continue.

| I would have preferred Lynch get the same punishment a non-celebrity would have received. But that ship has sailed.
I'm hoping that if the Bills give Marshawn a babysitter, he'll be able to avoid making such stupid decisions in the future. I want a buzzkill stapled to his ass, so he doesn't get into any further problems. What bugs me is that this kid never had any problems in high school or college. Now that he has money, he's turning into a yet another NFL primadonna.

| I imagine some, including myself, would find the Washington Redskins signing Albert Haynesworth of more interest. However, Mr. and Mrs. Brady do create a much bigger media frenzy.

| And we got to keep DeAngelo Hall. Now if we can draft some decent O-Line, we should be able to do fairly well.
