German -> English translation of Beck book

    Hi

I have a copy of Emil Beck's "Tauberbischofsheim Fechtlektionen" or something like that, it's not in front of me now. It's his book of fencing lessons, circa mid-80s. The text is in German, which I speak only imperfectly. I wonder if there is a fluent-in-both-German-and-English fencer who would like to make a few bucks helping me with a translation? Or is there a translation out there somewhere I'm not aware of? I don't plan to publish this, I use the book as a source for drills for youth epee fencers, and while the pictures are pretty clear and my faulty German helps some, it would be nice to actually know what he's saying.

Email me at K_S_ONeill at yahoo if you're interested and we'll work out how much work it would be for you and how much help I can afford.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Might want to look at The Complete Guide to Fencing edited by Beck and Barth and see if that has what you're looking for first.

Not much help there, as it needs an English to English translation.

Probably doesn't; having owned both books, I can tell you that they are different. My German isn't great, but I would say that both are worth reading.

I'll second Kevin's offer to anyone living in the SF Bay.

Why couldn't this have come up a little later. I'm working on a degree in German translation, but I'm probably not good enough yet.

I bet you're good enough; I'm not going to put you on a mic at the UN, you're not going to start a war if you mistake "mussen" for "Messer". Talk to your most sympathetic prof and see if you can get credit for working on it. To a great extent the sentence structure is very simple; there are a number of compound nouns and verbs we'd have to make sense of by context (I'm sure "yeilding prime parry" is all one word in German, for instance). I can send you a xerox of some pages if that would help.

It wouldn't surprise me if you could get "independent study" credit or something alone those lines if you did a project like this.

Granted, I'm not unbiased, because I really want to read it.
    "Sir, didn't I parry"
"You didn't take advantage of his blade enough, so no."

(I guess i should have romanced it a bit more..."

Sympathetic? They're German professors, what makes you think they'd be sympathetic?

I'm willing to try. Since I won't be able to fence for a while, I should have some spare time.

    Hi Stritti

Thanks very much for your generous offer. I got your email, so we can discuss some help as your time permits.

One thing I think you could help me with a lot is a German <-> English fencing specific dictionary. There is already one here:

    http://www.fencingmastersprogram.com/terms.php

But Maestro Beck's book uses a lot of terms not listed there.

Thanks again for the offer, and I'll be in touch.

Well Emil in his time used a lot extras and so it is not so easy to translate it with a normal dictionary into english. Will you be in Germany that year or europe for a competition maybe !?

    Stritti,
I will be in Germany this fall. I will most likely be in Dresden. I'm not sure where you are in Germany, but I am hoping to do some competing, while I am there. Perhaps if K'on sends me a photocopy of the book, we could try to meet and you could help with the translation. Also, could you recommend a club in or close to Dresden? I fence epee.

    Thank you!
