Lets keep this simple:
Do you really want to have to get and maintain a lame?
(sure, sabres have no button-tip or wires running down the blade. A wire costs a few bucks, but a lame?)

One of the most important things that you should look for in a club is what is the participation level of the fencers themselves? What I mean is, how many of the kids (and parents) "work" or help out around the club? As a new parent, have any of the more experienced parents "taken you under their wing"? Is there a social interaction among the parents? Do the members of the club engage in extracurricular activities not involving fencing? How many of the kids have become assistant coaches? How many kids have stuck around for a long time? How many have gone on to coach's college and returned to the club? These are all things that you see in a good club.
The choice of weapon is an easy change. Harder to change a club.
A good club usually has good coaches.

That may be the best answer yet.
(way better than mine)
Because you all will be spending a lot of time with these people.

Didn't expect this post to get active again, but to MdA, Rockstar, and all others who emphasized the quality of the club, thank you. That was very helpful. We recently decided to go with epee because we found out that the epee club is much more active and highly respected among local fencers and high school coaches. Plus they now have a sabre coach and they still recommend epee for my son. So the choice became clearer. Interestingly, I can't say the parents are all that friendly(!) so far, but the coaches and some older students have been wonderful. He has his first set of equipment now, so off he goes! It's also good to know that now he has the option of sabre at this club if he wants to try it again in the future. Thanks all.

The better advice may come from the one with the full compliment of tools.

i totally belive that he should do saber
1. saber is the easiest to learn how to be good in
2. saber is a lot more fun to do
3. eppee has a lot of girls and it is kind of werid for guys to do eppee]
4. saber rules!
plus the coaches said he was good at saber
I think this post is the new champion for dumbest post in f.net history...
