How exactly does one execute a Prime in epee?

Same as you would in foil, probably...blade positioned like you were drawing it out of a scabbard.

I've used it many times in epee on lefties....parry in prime and riposte to the stomach....if I can put it on it's effective. That and arm shots are sometimes the only way I can hit them.

    Ahh...sorry.

Here's what I do...but I'm kinda self-taught....so someone who's been taught how should chime in.

From en garde, drop the point down to a seven (how far down kinds depends on where the attack's coming from...if it's coming from or toward the feet the point would have to drop farther than to the lower torso), at the same time pronate the hand (that's palm down) and sweep the blade toward your outside to make the parry....the height of the hand, like the point, will depend on where the attack's coming from.

    Learn this from a coach.

If you do not have a coach, find one.

If you cannot find a coach, learn from watching better fencers and mimicking them.

If you cannot find better fencers, watch video of better fencers on the internet and mimic them.

The odds of you learning an action correctly off an internet description are just about 0.

I should add that I'm not saying that PF's description is wrong, just that it's a difficult medium to learn from.

Also, the options I presented above are in drastically decreasing order of effectiveness.

Everything I learned, I learned from the interwebs...
    ...except fencing.

Talking about fencing is like dancing about architecture.

I would find a coach or assume I am doing some approximation of the manoeuvre.

Oh I'll agree that learning from a written description is problematic at best...I kinda went with the watch and imitate method, as I had no money for lessons. Fortunately, I was always fairly good at picking it up by watching, so it's kinda worked for me...but I agree that a live body teaching is the best way.

I explain the gross movements this way:

    1) You are wearing a watch on your weapon hand.
    2) Look at the watch by rotating your wrist towards your body.
    3) Fencers are opportunists though (evil fencers): keep your tip pointed at their thigh while looking at your watch.

But yeah, get a coach to show you as there's a lot of nuance in the specific execution.

    James.
If it's stupid, but it works, it's not stupid.
