Next question is what can we do to induce more than about a dozen of those 183 fencers to become members of US Fencing?

What would provide a compelling reason for their families to pay $60/year?

Increased information about currently-existing competitive opportunities? Additional competitive opportunities that are different from those that currently exist? Some form of outreach to reduce barriers to getting the fencers into US Fencing competitions? Additional benefits that aren't directly competition-based?

I tried to post a question on the blog site but it requires an account which I do not have. So I'll post it here:

Is there any high school fencing in Southern Illinois?

We have 6 high school fencers in Millstadt (near St. Louis). We have been entering open competitions and we have been competing against University teams. We have not found any other high school teams.

We are not associated with a public school. We are a coed Scout group. All our fencers are high school students and it would be great to find other high school groups to compete against.

I believe you can create a gmail account and post your comments there. We require accountability for posted comments and wish to demonstrate just how many people fence or are interested in fencing.

We have been researching and digging away locating as many High School fencing programs as possible. Please forward any such programs to our attention by State and School Name.

Thank You.

Academic All-American

I have been looking for a place to ask this question and this looks as promising as any other.

I know there is a program called Academic All-American for students (high school and college I believe) with GPA's at or above 3.5. In the men's gymnastics arena, it is fairly easy to find the forms, deadlines, etc. I don't see any equivalent information anywhere on local or national fencing sites and it would seem like a good thing to recognize in our fencers. Am I just not seeing it, or does this recognition not exist for the fencing community? It would look good on transcripts and give the athletes something to strive for.

A quick search and I found the men's gymnastics program you mention. It's run by USA Gymnastics. US Fencing does not have an equivalent program, but that doesn't mean we can't get one established.

Since you seem familiar with I'll ask you a quick question:

It doesn't appear to require any minimum of gymnastic ability or achievement to earn, but rather is completely an academic award. Despite the requirement for letters of recommendation, etc. I don't see anything that indicates a selection method or criteria, beyond the GPA requirements.

Am I missing something, or is that actually the way it works in gymnastics?

There is no gymnastics level needed, but it is just for high schoolers. The student's are generally in upper levels of competition (JO's), but not all are. The awards are presented at the state and regional level end of the season competitions (the qualifiers to go to nationals). There is a program at States with bios of all the seniors and it includes how many years they have been Academic All American's. as well as where they are going to college and their most memorable moments, etc.

the best way to reach anyone for any reason is a personal invite. Send a free copy of the fencing magazine with a few of the coupons and a personalized letter listing the benefits with an "act now and get three years at the current price" ad. Follow up with a phone call from a local youth. The only way I get youth to join in our park and rec group is to personally talk to the parent and have my son speak to the kid.
