    Istanbul, Not Constantinople

Is there any way to find out who is entered in the Saber World Cup this weekend in Turkey?

I was just wondering how many of the Old Guard -- Montano, Smart, Tarantino, Pozdniakov, Covaliu, etc. -- were calling it quits after the Olympics . . . I know some of them are definitely out, but wanted to see who was in the mix this year.

A partial answer to your question

The Italian Fencing Federation (FIS) official web site posts every Thursday before an international competition who of their people is going where and how (paid or at his/hers expense). They follow up upon completion of the event with the results and some commentary by the national coach, if warranted.

Regarding the Istanbul event this weekend, the first senior A event of the season, this is what the FIS posted on Thursday:

    http://www.federscherma.it/news.asp?i=66944&s=7

SENIOR MS WORLD CUP (Istanbul, “World Cup Istanbul 2009”, A, January 17-18)

Fencers at their expense: Cristiano Imparato, Raffaele Forcella.
2008 Results: 1. Aldo Montano (ITA); 2. Diego Occhiuzzi (ITA); 3. Aron Szilagyi (HUN); 3. Balazs Lontay (HUN).
Last Italian victory in Istanbul: 2008, Aldo Montano.
Last Italian victory in WC: Aldo Montano, June 21, 2008, Las Vegas.
Ranking FIE Italians: 215. Cristiano Imparato; unc. Raffaele Forcella.

From this you can deduce that this event is not a designated event for the Italian top saber fencers. The FIS, like the FFE, the USFA, and almost all federations is facing budget limitations and therefore they are selective in the number of WC events they send their fencers. Obviously, those who wish to go and pay their way, may submit their application to the federation which will then sign them in (like we do).

In another thread on the FIS web site

    http://www.federscherma.it/news.asp?i=66977&s=7

it announces the first national camp of the season for the elite saber fencers (men and women) which will last from January 19 to 23. This camp is in preparation for their beginning of the international season which will include for men's saber Athens (Jan 31 - Feb 1), Gran Prix Budapest (Feb 6-8) and Moscow (Feb 12-14); women's saber will debut their season in London (Jan 31 - Feb 1), followed by the Gran Prix of Orleans (Feb 6-8) and Moscow (Feb 15-17).

If you are interested, this is the lists of participants to the national saber camp organized by the FIS:

Men's Saber: Luigi Tarantino, Diego Occhiuzzi, Marco Ciari, Massimiliano Murolo, Fabrizio Marino, Stefano Sbragia, Lorenzo Romano, Enrico Navarria, Aldo Montano, Giampiero Pastore, Andrea Aquili, Marco Tricarico, Luca Iacometti, Luigi Samele, Alberto Pellegrini, Luigi Miracco, Fabrizio Verrone, Cristiano Imparato.

Women's Saber: Irene Vecchi, Loreta Gulotta, Ilaria Bianco, Gioia Marzocca, Rossella Gregorio, Irene Di Transo, Lucrezia Sinigaglia, Alessandra Lucchino, Marianna Tricarico, Mariangela Postiglione, Livia Stagni, Roberta Elefante, Maria Teresa Lajacona, Francesca Buccione.

Technical staff: Giovanni Sirovich (CT for saber); Leonardo Caserta, Tommaso Dentico, Alessandro Di Agostino, Lucio Landi, Ferdinando Meglio, Nicola Zanotti (coaches); Federico Morelli (physician); Alessandro Moccia, Ferdinando Margutti (physiotherapists); Felice Romano (conditioning coach).

    Thanks.

    IMHO :

Mr. Williams flew to Constantinopol for 1 bout?

Belarus' with Lapkes, Buikevich and Priyomka will be a force for a while.

Seems like Bykov and Frossin are gone form Russia, I hear that Savich is the new wunderkid - with Kovalev, Reshetnikov, Yakimenko and other "youtts" - they should be all right.

A lot of depth for French, but where's Boris Sanson?

Bulgarian in top 32 - don't recall since Ganchev, Etrolpol'ski and Hristov?

Nice to see an Israeli sabreur for an obvious reason.

    Glaring absentees : Italy, Romania, Spain, China, Hungary;
not so glaring : Korea, Japan, Senegal.

Overall looked like a terrific tourney with a lot of close and strong bouts.

Not sure about the other two, but isn't lapkes pretty old, for international sabre? Like close to podz age?

Lapkes is 32 - but seems much thinner than Pozdniakov, thus more durable IMHO, he'll be 36 in London - which might work for #3,
Buikevich is 24 and a reigning European Champion, Prieymka is 25.
