Michael Jordan's New Shoe Based on Fencing!

    http://timmorehouse.wordpress.com/

Jason and I have a friend who attended the unveiling of the new Air Jordan shoe where the legend himself, Michael Jordan, said that his new shoe is based on the sport of fencing! Amazing!

This would be awesome stuff if the USFA had a publicist and a development director to use in marketing material...

Now, how do we get Michael Jordan fencing?

Some more details on our blog:

You just tell him that he just might be able to do well in this sport.

Let's get all these ex-jocks off those twinkie shows like "Dancing With the Stars" (and I'm looking at you, Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice) and instead do a celebrity saber tournament. From NY, maybe you can get Patrick Ewing (or maybe someone from the Yankees) to pick up the sport, Michael can learn from Etropolski in Chicago, we'll work with Jerry Rice here, LA (or Vegas) can work with OJ, oh sorry, he's busy at the moment, and so on. Let's get 8 of them.

Tell them we'll do the celebrity saber tournament during the Summer Nationals in Dallas. Emmitt can join in, too.

I just found a picture of the event and they have that picture of Jon Tiomkin in the air from Athens showing in the background as they talk. Just posted it on my blog.

Wonder if he knows they used it?

http://www.complex.com/blogs/2009/01...jordan-2009/3/ interview with the shoe designer. The white pleats on the shoe's upper is what was inspired by fencing.

They do look very cool, but not practical for Epee fencing.

At the very least the USFA could sent a letter acknowledging how pleased they are to have him design a shoe inspired by fencing. And remind him how TeamUSA won 6 medals in Beijing. And then offer to give him more infomation about fencing if he is interested--say a fencing lesson at a club or an invite to Nationals...whatever...it's a nobrainer

Given a choice, he'd probably rather be given a Chihuly piece....(sorry Peet).

The midsole of the shoe was inspired by Chihuly blown glass.

But, you know, an invitation couldn't hurt.

I am much less impressed now knowing that the inspiration was some designer's perception of the fencing aesthetic.

But association with MJ's name certainly won't hurt.

Dale Chihuly is one of those artists that has a profound effect on their art/medium. I saw some of his stuff in Las Vegas, and a video on how he works with a team to create extraordinary works of art. If I had the money to invest in art today, I wouldn't hesitate to get the nicest Chihuly I could afford. http://www.chihuly.com

I actually just bought a chandelier from a local artist that was heavily influenced by Chihuly, at a great bargain. http://www.bearcreekglass.com

(no, I have no financial interest in this... just a big fan... and have a wife who teaches art)

In the Seattle area, you can hardly swing a cat without breaking a Chihuly piece. Outside of Murano, Italy, he's probably the most famous glass artist in the world, and he's massively over-exposed and (IMHO) vastly over-rated. But his works are made on a grand scale that look hugely impressive hanging down from the ceilings of expensive hotel lobbies. I will admit that his style is very unique -- just a bit ostentatious for my taste.
Is that your little friend in the wood chipper?
