Array 2009 Senior Games Fencing Challenge It is with great pleasure that I announce, to the veterans who frequent this forum, the 2009 Senior Games Fencing Challenge.
This tournament is held Saturday and Sunday, August 8-9, 2009 on Treasure Island, just between San Francisco and Oakland in California.
The tournament is for veterans 50-59 and 60+ age groups. Competition will be held in all three weapons and both sexes, and for the above two age groups.
All information can be found on askFRED: 2009 Senior Games
This tournament is part of the 2009 Senior Games, the world's largest multi-sport games (upwards of 12,000 competitors) and will include an opening ceremony on Saturday August 8 at Stanford University (where most of the games are being held). Come join the 2009 Senior Games and come away with a cool medal, or a genuine BART ticket, or some really nice sourdough bread, or a Stanford sweatshirt, or. . .
Seriously, follow the FRED link above, register and have a great time there! -

Array wierd timing I've been looking for a Vet tournament around here. I, however, reserved a room at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (very hard to get the room you want, as there is only one place to stay at the North Rim) for the same time. I'm trying to change that date, but it may not work. It's good to know I can fence folks over 60, as those pesky 50 year olds can be a problem.
Where is a good place to stay? -

Array I really don't need another t-shirt but when I tried to pre-register without ordering one, AskFred indicated this was a required item.
Is this intentional? -

Is this intentional? Should not be a requirement. I'll check FRED and make changes to the options if that is the case. Sorry. -

Array Fixed the options. They're no longer requirements (at least that's what I'm guessing is the change).
OBTW, only the first 56 fencers can sign up for any of the events, so make sure you sign up early or else you're going to miss out on this great event. Losers are automatically shipped to Alcatraz for an intensive "gitmo-style" correction of their actions. Winners get an extra siu-mai. -
Registration Completed Eric,
Thanks for the reminder. I got a flyer at the Vets meeting in Colorado Springs, but I didn't notice the 56 entrant limit.
How will you manage the shirt sizing?

Bill We have small, medium, large and epeeists. Seriously, I have no clue. I'm just the PR flack for this event. I'll get back to you on this.
(I guess I can add another option on T-shirt sizes) -

Array Ok, added the field for selecting t-shirt sizes. Those who've signed up, feel free to make addition to your t-shirt choice (if chosen) by specifying the t-shirt size. Sorry, no sizes for poster or lunch. -

Array Two minute periods for DEs? Really?
Have I been reffing vets events wrongly all this time?
Just curious, why 56? -
Fencing Expert
Array I think it's 3 minute periods, standard USFA/FIE times. Did I mistype?
56 because it's a product of 2 primes, one with multiplicity of 3: 56 = 2^3 x 7, 5 = 2 + 3, 6 = 2 * 3 and 7 comes after 5 and 6. Cool, huh? -

( I use the phrase "look forward" loosely! )
NB Somehow I doubt that I need to beware of the entry cap for the sabre events... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array The announcement says the tournament is USFA and FIE sanctioned.
Does this mean that the FIE Jackets etc.. are required? "a braggart, a rogue, a villaine that fights by the book of arithmatick. Why the dev'l came you betweene us?.." -
Fencing Expert
Array You mean FIE homologated equipment and names on the back?
I'll check, but probably. It is expected that there are some international fencers attending. -

Array USFA not FIE equipment required UPDATE:
I got in contact with the tournament organizers to determine that USFA equipment standards will be applied for this tournament so you will not have to rush out to purchase FIE gear to participate.
Here is the latest flyer:
