Array Double Stripping? Is there something wrong with double stripping that I don't know?
I was directing recently, and I finished my pool. A neighboring pool still had several bouts to be completed. I offered to take a few on my strip. At that, the referee (someone I have known for several years) became passive aggressive and then wandered off to find food, leaving his confused scorekeeper (also a referee) to finish the pool alone. (I was called off to attend to unrelated business).
Is this a freak incident or did I commit a faux-pas? "everything combusted?" --lucas, trying to verify what was said to him about a sandwich. what was actually said was "everything but mustard" -

Offering to double strip a refs pool bouts is like if your friend tells you he and his wife are having trouble getting pregnant, and then you offer to sleep with his wife to "help out". Seriously, you just dont do that.

Array Don't double strip if the pool is under 7 people, and there's more than like 3 bouts left.

Please note that OROD is being slightly sarcastic. Without saying anything negative about your slacker friend, your actions will make you the darling of every assigner/BC chair. Remember that their job is mostly to find underused, bored looking refs, and send them over to "tell Bob to double strip this and get this round done, so I can start another event." -

It is okay, and often good to double strip pools which are running slower. The way the referee in the story responded is bizarre and dumb. Over here, the first thing an official ref does on finishing a pool is go round the venue looking for slower pools to split. Similarly, if my pool is running slow I'm only too happy to have someone come and split it. It's most certainly not a faux pas. It sounds like the ref was a jerk. -

Array Get different friends Granted, I have seen referees refuse to double strip a pool due to "arrogance." They think they are so good, they don't NEED to double strip it.
This tends to piss off alot of other people...
Offering to double strip someone's pool is a very nice thing to do. Most people will greatly appreciate it.
Telk is right though, don't double if its close to the end. (You can still offer if ya want, no one should take offense at it). Don't double strip if its 5 or smaller, and 6s are a middle ground. "Sir, didn't I parry"
"You didn't take advantage of his blade enough, so no."
(I guess i should have romanced it a bit more..." -

Array Speaking as a referee... if we're still doing poules it mean there is still a very long day ahead of us so any help is appreciated if i've got that poule with the equipment problems or every fight going to extra time.
The referee was being a jerk. At least be appreciative of someone trying to help - even if you've only got a fight or two left and you'd rather finish it off yourself. -
A few months ago I was directing a pool and we actually had to TRIPLE STRIP.
This wasn't my fault. There were plenty of equipment problems on my strip which slowed things down (broken reel, bodycord, etc).
I was happy the two other directors helped me out.
AND I wasn't the last strip to finish. (\ /)

I have to respectfully disagree with you and Telk here; if you can speed things up and a strip is free; there's rarely a reason not to do it. "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent."

Array Well, as long as the fencers have a minute or two to breathe, it's just fine. For some of the smaller tournaments (such as one with 9 competitors) there's a pool of 4. In such a pool, there's no way to avoid having them fence back-to-back bouts. There were enough delays and chitchat that they had a sufficient break between bouts. Array Maybe somehow the guy thought you were telling him he refs too slow. Some people read insult into anything. -

Array I saw some double stripping in the 2008 Olympics. They kept the strips busy. But maybe this guy had other issues.
(yeah, like he thought you said that the colour of his tie really brought out his eyes. I can see how that mistake could happen.)
Or maybe it was the way you told him that if he did not hurry up you were going to shave his cat.
Ok... now I am just being silly. -
