When is the Best Time to Lunge?: Part 2
So as I promised in the first part of this post, here are some drills to improve your lunge and your ability to recognize your lunge distance in a bout. (They require a partner and should be done hooked up to a machine.)

I don't know about best time... but worse time is a second before your opponent's blade is about to hit you. <rubs arm> Doh! I hate when I do that!!!

    Dan,

    No offense, but isn't:

A parry riposte (with a lunge)
    Kinda redundant?

I mean, obviously, if you're doing a parry/riposte with a lunge, then, well, it's necessary to lunge and hence, a good time to do so.

    *grin*

I do, however, disagree with the breakdown: it seems simultaneously too restrictive (what does RoW have to do with lunging??) and too generic (when the target is moving towards you or moving away from you seems to cover pretty much every situation I can think of).

To me, the best time to lunge is when you can *ALMOST* hit with a thrust, but need a little extra to get there.

Obviously, if the opponent steps in after their attack falls short, you wouldn't lunge at them would you? Too, if you didn't have RoW, but could hit with a single light, you would, wouldn't you?

How big a lunge you need is dependent upon what the target is doing and how you're trying to hit them. In that light, the *right* time to lunge is when you *need* to lunge and can hit the target!

To me, at least, these questions of *lunge timing* are more about *attack timing* then anything else and knowing when to attack is a much more subtle problem then simply knowing when to lunge.

    Hope this helps.

    James.

You lunge when you want to set your opponent up to be hit with the subsequent fleche.

    +1

I don't want to criticize anything Dan wrote as incomplete (because IT'S DAN KELLNER and also) because it's labeled part 1.

I think what Dan has set up is a good base for other posts describing the exact nature of the different elements he has mentioned. However, by itself I don't think it's complete. It's too tactically basic. I think it would benefit from a post describing how to get to those situations.

If you would like to see this sort of stuff, why not post the comment on his blog asking for further information?

Great question and, in classic Coaching fashion, I'll answer it with another question:

What's the point of this thread if not to discuss the issue of lunge timing on F.NET?

And Dan should know that it's generally considered ill-form to use this forum to drive traffic to his own blog. He is Dan K after all, and we kinda cut him some slack in the beginning because of that, but if I wanted to get updates on his blog entries I'd subscribe to his RSS feed.

I would prefer precision. "Shorten your retreats and make a half advance followed by a fleche to steal time" rather than "use your feet."

Given that both are accurate, the former is a lot more useful than the latter. Precise data usually are.
