Array Snow Day Alright, so my school just called saying school is cancelled tomorrow and Im so ridiculously happy as its the last day before winter break and I had a Trig test last period and now I dont have to take it for another two weeks or so. Best feeling in the world. I jumped up and down when I got the news.
Anyone have any interesting snow day stories?
I remember a year or two back it was supposed to snow a lot and so the school gave us a snow day and then it never snowed. Not a single flake -
No snow here. Schools have been closed if it gets too hot. -

We only got school canceled once for cold, and I think it was about -50 with windchill, -30 without.
To get a snow day in Madison it takes about a foot in a night. Bull****. -

Array WE get a day off if we get like an inch. But if it lasts for more than a day or two they get serious, clear the paths, and make everyone go to school anyways. However, it doesn't snow often, so people almost flip when it does. "When Fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and bearing a cross." -

Array Pfft! 105 degrees?! I LAUGH at 105 degrees! HA HA! See? Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Bah... I've slept in my car in -40 one night while travelling through the mountains (several times)!
To be truthful it was a great sleep. I had a nice warm parka with a deep hood and snow pants on over my pants. Warm all night. Not something I would recommend without good gear. Beer, it's whats for dinner! ~ a young snowboarding Canadian The meek don't want it! ~ sticker on a rock band's guitar -

Array Last year was the only time class was cancelled at my univ., which was only for a day, and there was about 2+ feet of snow with hail. Unfortunately I had only found the notice in my inbox AFTER I begrudgingly ran late for an 8:30. -

Array We got a snow day here at UMass on the last day of finals for like....nothing. They canceled it in anticipation of the storm that was coming the night before, moved finals to Saturday, and we really only got like 8 inches and it didn't even start until noon. It was absurd, but it pushed a paper back a day and gave me an excuse to go to the bars....so I'm not complaining. -

Array I would say something like "what is this snow you speak of? In SoCal that means cocaine..." but with snow actually falling in the SoCal mountains (up the 14 to Lancaster, closing the Grapevine on the 5, and on the San Gabriels....where I can SEE it from my house) I really can't say that anymore!
Weirdest one...I was selling gear at Desert Fencing Academy in Palm Desert a couple of years back and while it was well over 100 onthe ground, there was snow at the top of the mountains....in April! -

Array We don't have snow days at my college, even though we get tons of snow...
In high school though I remember us getting a really bad ice storm and having classes canceled for almost an entire break because no one had power. "Fencing is a sport where physical attributes seem not as important as determination."

Array Where I live, it can snow two feet in one night, and they still won't call off school. Once though the Governor ordered all schools to be closed because it was so cold out. It was something like -50 F without windchill. When love bites, be sure to bite back.

Hi!
A former colleague of mine once spent a few months in Novosibirsk. It was cold when he came there, and he was told of a climate in which there were long spells of -30 Centigrade, with dips to -50 C not uncommon. The people whom he worked with had spent a some time in Verchoyansk, in which the temperature reaches -50 C for months on end, with dips approaching -70 C possible. There, leaving a car without heating going on throught the night could lead to the gasoline freezing in the tank. The rubber in the tires could crack, since the temperature went under the glass temperature of rubber.
OTOH, Novosibirsk is not all bad, the town map that my colleage brought back had a sign for the "Viktoria Fencing Club", complete with its coat-of-arms, two crossed sabres.
Surprisingly, these places are not all that far north. The place where I worked with this colleague is Luleå, at 65 degrees north, just north of Fairbanks at 64N. Verchoyansk is only a few hundred km´s north. Novosibirsk, in contrast, is located at 55 degrees North, which is even south of Juneau at 58N. Now I live in the extreme south of Sweden, at 56 N. Winters here are awful - only snow a few days each year, plenty of rain, and grey skies almost always.
Happy Xmas!

Probably not quite as cold as there, but we're just south of 45N "When Fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and bearing a cross." -

Array When I was in the US Air Force my first TDY (temporary duty) was Thule, Greenland...it was around the 30 degree F mark one day and while most of us had our parkas zipped up all the way, I saw this Danish guy walking down the street with only shorts and thongs....acting like it was a nice balmy day!!
Freaked me out... -

Array My brother-in-law lives in Alberta. The weather had been -45 C / -49F for weeks before his trip to Las Vegas where it was about 6 degrees C/ 43F. Naturally this was quite balmy for him and walked around in shorts and t-shirts much to the surprise of the locals.
