Like saber bell guards? Probably not. Better training and technique would probably do more to prevent injuries, though there will always be risk. That is the nature of sport.

    Yes

    4. If you have some experience with rapiers, what do you think of rapier hilts compared to fencing bell guards?
I think rapier hilts work better against a rapier. It would do little to stop something like an epee.

    5. Do you ever feel as if a longer bell guard would help lower the number of injuries to the hand and wrist?
Unlikely. While I've gotten bruised on the knuckle while pommeling, a longer guard wouldn't help that, and all my other injuries were sprains or over use.

Everything else mentioned is a repetitive stress thing that isn't just from fencing (particularly the knees (from my basketball days)).

    Yes.

    4. If you have some experience with rapiers, what do you think of rapier hilts compared to fencing bell guards?
Bell guards actually protect your hands. Rapier hilts don't.

No. Not at all, and it would be illigal. Before beginning this project, it probably would have been a good idea to read the regulations for weapons.

Nothing that would apply...took a nasty hit to the fingers on my back hand (left) during a "no holds barred 8 year old grudge match" though. Bruised the bone.
Although not extremity, I did bruise my Menubrium good from one hit a few weeks ago.

I know I'm late on this :eep:

    1. Where have the worst injuries you have sustained in your fencing career occurred?
    Upper Extremity
    I. Shoulder/II. Upper arm (I honestly don't know whcih was worse, so both?)

    Lower Extremity
    II. Thigh/III. Knee

    2. What is the severity of your worst injury?
    (2) & (3), as I'd assume cuts that left scars count as serious cuts..? And I have had pulls, more than once.

    3. Have you ever fought with or handled a rapier? No.

    4. If you have some experience with rapiers, what do you think of rapier hilts compared to fencing bell guards?

    n/a

    5. Do you ever feel as if a longer bell guard would help lower the number of injuries to the hand and wrist?

Perhaps, but I don't really believe it would be a huge difference.

    1. Where have the worst injuries you have sustained in your fencing career occurred?
    Upper Extremity: Elbow
    Lower Extremity: Knee

    2. What is the severity of your worst injury? Sprain/Strain (this poll is flawed: missing major category for things like 'torn ligament or cartilage)

    3. Have you ever fought with or handled a rapier? (yes or no) yes

    4. If you have some experience with rapiers, what do you think of rapier hilts compared to fencing bell guards? What Warrior Princess said: Bell guards actually protect your hands. Rapier hilts don't.

    5. Do you ever feel as if a longer bell guard would help lower the number of injuries to the hand and wrist? no (I think most wrist and hand injuries are due to over-usage, rather than being hit)

Thank you! I know this is tedious, but I greatly appreciate it! And, it would help if you all would continue to refer other fencers to the survey, seeing as I still need a lot of replies!!

Happy New Year to you all and God bless!
