Sabre in the San Francisco area? Hi all,
There's a somewhat substantial chance that I may be moving to San Francisco in the near future.
I fence sabre and obviously intend to continue should I move - my question is: to what extent would I be able to train and compete at a high level in the SF area?
For the time being, let's define "high level" as anywhere from DivIA to Satellite World Cups. I am not on a national team.
What is the quality of coaching for sabre in S.F.?
What is the quality of potential training partners? I checked USFA membership and didn't see too many A's or B's.
Is there enough out there to keep me competitive if I end up making this move?
Previously I have fenced in the Boston and Metro-NYC areas.
Hoping you guys can give me a general sense of things. -

Array First Place Fencing Club (my club) is located in San Carlos, about 20 miles south of SF proper.
A typical saber night at the club is equivalent to a B1 level event: about 4 Bs, 4-5 Cs several Ds and Es.
The SF Bay Area doesn't get too many As because by the time they get their A, they're off to college and we can't use them to generate other A's. Not too many A's come to SF area for fencing, unfortunately. -

Array Halberstadt also has a decent saber program--a few Bs and Cs--and it's located in the Mission in SF. -
I fence sabre out here. I miss the New England division, and it's certainly no New York, but you do the best you can.
The crowds can run a little thin, but there are good coaches around. -

Array I also coach at First Place, and we do have kids winning medals in cadet and earning points in junior. We also have one guy doing Satellite world cups, and several who fence in div 1A.
