    Re-use sabre bayonet socket for foil?

    Hi,

    This might be a stupid thing to ask, but;

    I've bought an Uhlman sabre with (LP style) bayonet socket. Now I'm switching this to my prefered 2-prong (sabre specific) socket. (Because that is the cables I have...)

    Can I reuse the bayonet socket for foil (I have a friend who use this system) or is the bayonet sabre socket wired differently?

    Regards,

    It depends.

    If the socket has a bit of wire running from the screw post where the foil wire normally attaches and connecting to the socket bracket then it can be converted for use in foil by removing that wire.

    If the socket doesn't have the screw post and instead has a metal plate between the socket body and the socket bracket then it's a sabre socket. It COULD be modified back by the readdition of a new base to the socket body, but there's a good chance it's not worth it unless you're good at playing with sockets and getting all of the pieces back into the correct shape to hold together reliably.

    Is it genuine LP or "LP style"? If it is genuine LP, then E-mail LP and see if they will convert it back. Although postage might not make that economical. Here in the states, someone would wait until they were at a competition with good vendors and take it to them to see what they could do.

    If you have someone who is competent at armoring, you could buy the part and have them do it. Use a small cable tie to hold the socket together afterwards.

    I am someone who picks up odd parts wherever possible. So I have a number of parts to make such a conversion. Most people don't bother to pick up the parts after the socket comes apart. I have collected parts for Uhlmann 2-pin retainers at different events, then used an Epee pressure spring and a screw/washer to repair other sockets.
