as to the drills - you pick whatever parry and riposte combination that you want to work on. for example, the circle 6 with a direct riposte. Fencer A lunges and fencer B steps back, takes a circle 6 and ripostes with a lunge. Fencer A has already recovered from his lunge, takes a step back with a circle 6 and ripostes with a lunge. And so it goes on until someone finally scores a touch. This should be done quickly, almost at bout speed. If you are well coordinated, your arm position is good and your distance is good, after several iterations you will eventually have to either change the timing a bit or use an advance lunge or alter the length of your step back in order to score. Teaches coordination, distance management and timing. -

A short return to topic In the Sports Illustrated of two weeks ago, there was an article about Russian Sport. In the article, a meeting of 22 oligarchs with Putin was described. During the meeting, Putin apparently made clear that great wealth carried with it an obligation to raise the level of Russian sport.
Does anyone worry that there may be a conflict of interest in having a head of the FIE who is also the head of the Russian Fencing Federation?
How much of his definition of an improvement of fencing is a return to glory of Russian fencers? -

How much of his definition of an improvement of fencing is a return to glory of Russian fencers? Wasn't it mentioned somewhere that Pozdniakov would be taking over the chairmanship of the Russian Fencing Federation? That would eliminate the conflict-of-interest you spoke of, right?
As far as Usmanov expressing some bias/preference as a result of his nationality... it's about as likely as it was with Roch, or any past FIE president, yes? Is he known for having a particularly nationalist bend (so much so that it goes above and beyond the norms of patriotism) in his personality? -
Except that I imagine there's a bit more risk... Russia isn't exactly the least nationalistic of nations. (I debated whether or not to post this, if only because I suspect backlash) -

How much of his definition of an improvement of fencing is a return to glory of Russian fencers? I don't think Usmanov is the head of the Russian Fencing Federation, yet you're correct on the last point. Randal : [after the fire at the Quick Stop] Terrorists?

Pozdniakov's title is State Coach of Russian National Fencing Team;
and Russian Fencing Federation has more bureaucratic titles than an average Fortune 500 Company, yet there is a chairman who is neither Usmanov nor Pozdniakov, and who has never held a blade in his hands IMHO ( a fencing blade that it is). Randal : [after the fire at the Quick Stop] Terrorists?

Based on that manifest I'd say this really seems to be a man who wants to improve the sport of fencing. So, will we see tubular epees soon? -

Whatever happens, it's not business as usual. Before the previous vote, in which Roch won over Usmanov, it was stated in a Swedish fencing organizational meet that Sweden was supporting Roch - on Renés own merits, not the demerits of the competition. Goes to show that different things are values in different places.
Have a nice time!
