The new FWF Ultra Barrels anyone having an issue with the ultra barrels splitting on BF blades. I split one recently with relativley modest amount of torgue; it started in the center of the flat side. Then I saw a PBT barrel that had split the same way on an BF blade. Hmmm. -

Array I have seen a couple of their epee barrels spit recently. I think a badly tempered batch may have gotten through. I certainly have not seen it happening widespread. Just another lost soul saved by the (hit) First Church of EPEE!

We have not seen this issue on the ones we've been wiring up.

Array I've split 2 barrels tightening them on my Vniti's and BF's. I wasn't overtightening either. -

Array Craig, do you use locktite?
If you're using locktite, you only have to apply mild pressure, because it won't come loose. That would explain why you haven't had any problems, if you do.
If you're not, you may think you're not overtightening, because it's as tight as you have to get it to keep it from constantly coming loose. However, you're applying a lot of torque.
If that's not the case, I don't know. Sounds like Cville said, bad batch. -

Array You have to check on the flare of the blade beyond the threading. A perfect fit would have the barrel just match the flare when the barrel is tight. If the blade gets too thick too fast, it spreads the end of the barrel and can cause it to split.
If the blade is the culprit, almost any tip will split.
You can either thin down the blade or widen the hole at the bottom of the barrel. Whoopee! My avatar is back. -

What variation of loctite do you use? I've been meaning to get some, but there are a number of different formulations, and I'm not sure what kind to buy for fencing applications.

Array The standard for barrels is Loctite Blue, the ~300 degree one. Similar Threads -
