| Fixing Cords Well, I didn't see anything else about this around the forums, so i thought I'd ask: do many fencers fix their own cords? I fence Sabre, and I fix my cords every time they break. My coach used to, but then she taught me how to. So do many fencers fix their own? (It's fairly simple) If not, who does?

| I fix mine. I do believe that I would quickly lose my cred as club armorer if I didn't.

The SECOND rule is never borrow the gear of an armorer...our stuff NEVER works! (We're too busy fixing yours!) |

| Shameless Plug OK, like 3 years ago now.. or so it seems Purp gave me his two-prong cords to test.
So, since I fence foil and use LP bayonet I have long since donated it to my club as I do a lot of the fixing on bodycords.
It's the only bodycord I don't have to repair.
I replaced the wire with Monster Cable and created a 'boot' to de-stress the wire as it comes out of the pins with a rubber gasket tape and colored electrical tape.
Sam eliminated Uhlmann-itis where the plastic cuts into the wire. By using a heavier gauge and sanding down the plastic so it fits into the pins I eliminated the space in the pins so theres no friction or movement.
The screws are similar to LP in that they pierce the plastic.
If Sam has any more and you fence Saber...its a no brainer.
I'm a big believer in destroying the concept of planned obsolescence. I don't fix stuff when it breaks, I make it so it doesnt break in the first place... if it does happen to break after the beating it takes from me... well.. then I guess i fix it. BUT!! I dont spend all day..just takes a sec.
If you buy it once, you never have to buy it again. ANd theres no hassle factor.
Shameless but very truthful plug.

| Now if only I had the money to properly produce the damnned things!
Mergs and I have pretty much solved the few issues the original cord design had...I just have no money to get the parts made. |

| Brother I hear you I'm sooooo out of work right now. In fact my car died over Thanksgiving weekend and I need a new distributor and coil. Anyone wanna paypal me $129.00 I'll pay it forward.....or I'll pay ya back as I can.
I have a 79 vette.. total beater but without it I cant even go interview.
Life has been total ****e for me.
Incidentally, I was hit by a car THAT SAME DAY. Luckily its not serious. I was in the parking lot of a restaurant favored by seniors. One driving a Lincoln Town Car.. handi plate # BTE32 backed into me as I was walking out of the restaurant. I rolled off the trunk and I did tweak my back a little.
Gotta stay positive, even if you feel like you're standing spread-eagled in front of a nut-kicking machine.
I just got back into fencing too....can't get to my club though. 50 miles away and no car makes FF really miserable.

| Fixing my son's body cords was my first step on the slippery slope to perdition (and armorers college).

Susie | Similar here....'cept they were my own cords (when all 4 fail in the same tournament and for the same reason, it's time to learn how!) |

| Luckily, I have yet to have one actually fail in a tournament. I have three, and while I regularly use two, the other is brand new, kept in a ziplock bag to avoid the corrosion issues my used cords are having.
However, I have had clubmates run up to me with failing body cords 20 minutes before they need to fence.
Although I'm seriously considering grabbing some of Rick's stainless cords... No corrosion would be nice.

| Mine rust through on the weapon end. (sweaty kid) Fortunately at about 48in in height, I can clip off a lot of cord before it is too short for me.
But they (my body cords) are too short to lend for about half their life.

Rick | How so, if I might ask?
I'm considering ordering a few things for the holidays, so I might as well throw in a bodycord and save on some shipping later...

The original were just offset but were one width the entire length of the pin. We were experiencing some problems with a few set of sockets. So we have tapered in the pin in to allow it to fit into well every type socket and reel we could put our hands on.
They are also made locally here in NJ instead of overseas.

For some reason it seems like mainly sabre fencers. I know all the epeeists can fix their own stuff...
