Which of these two sets of presents should I get my nephew?
My sister said she prefers the blocks, but that's not the best reason I can think of to not get him the piano, and drum.
On the other hand I used to love blocks- hell my mom is bugging me to pick something for her to buy for me to unwrap (apparently watching me open money cards just isn't that fun for her) and I've asked her for one of these.
For his birthday a few months ago the little bugger got this as well as the 175 ball booster pack! I am totally the most popular uncle!

Actually, I had this idea that I would try to prevent my child from ever discovering the toy department of any store. I was thinking if I could keep them from ever knowing there's a toy department or toy store then they might think all toys came from two places: Santa, and some weird workshop I keep in the basement.
It's never going to work. Sure, you can bluff the basement workshop by saying "Only grown ups can see it", but once you go into a store, the kid is going to see someone else with a toy and bug you about where he/she got it from. And sometimes, the toy department is a bit difficult to avoid depending on placement.
As for the gifts, go for the blocks. When the kid is older, you can get him legos!

I decided on the middle ground of get blocks and toy instruments! I do believe that gift-giving is a competition.
He's mildly spoiled but it's ok cause he listens to the authority voice (mine and his father's- I think my sister might have some trouble with him though). More importantly it's amazing how enriched my life is just from there being someone who, no matter what is going on, gets excited every time he sees me walk into a room. It's amazing how much it cheers me up to see a two year old smile just because I walked in the room.
