    Insider tips

So, does anyone have any recommendations for finding a good deal on hotel accommodations for the Orlando NAC?

    NAC in Orlando...

    ...when and where?

Sounds like a lot of fun, but a long way to travel to have that type of fun :-(

Oct 11-14, 2002. Disneyworld's Wide World of Sports complex.

    Looks like fun.

    I'll be there to referee.

Hhhmmm, a bit too far to go right now. am off to Australia in November and have just booked a ski holiday (to Colorado) for February - so maybe a trip to Orlando right now would be a bit too much for my husband's wallet.

We were in Orlando (and Miami) last month, so it was a nice thought...

(In British fencing we get to travel to such wonderful places as Bristol, Ashton (near Manchester), Cardiff, Brimingham and a number of places which most Americans will never have heard of. American fencers have much more exciting competition venues! Oh well, I suppose it costs me a lot less to do the major competitions on our domestic circuit than it would cost an American on the US Circuit...)

    Boo boo,

Americans travel quite a bit. You would be surprised, but I have been at Bristol and Cardiff. Enjoy your skiing trip...

Yes, I will be there for the Commonwealths.

Are you back in Australia or just going back at that time?

Unfortunately I am coming straight back after the events have finished, so I wouldn't really get to see any other bits of Australia :-(. Nevermind, will have to take another trip out there to explore sometimes soon.

But the question was...has anyone got any "hot tips" for finding an inexpensive room rate? ( Sorry, DJ, I ain't GOT no coach! )

The venue hotel appears to have a set rate, I was unable to find any discounts through the usual sources ( hotel.com, orbitz, sidestep, etc. ). More distant hotels will have to be enough less per night to justify a rental car...and will one be able to get into the Disney fiefdom without paying an entry fee every time?

I'm finding this one a bit perplexing.

I used to be in the hotel business. I don't know anything on going rates, but generally, you might want to try to stay in Dania, Fla. or Kissimee. They're not all that far away and are a bit cheaper. The inexpensive line in the brand I worked for was called Four Points, they can be pretty reasonable, but sometimes the quality suffers. There were some properties in the general area when I still worked for the company and they were generally relatively nice.

And Boo, usually the places we get to go for tournaments aren't nearly that exciting, or if they are we're there during the worst time of year, with the exception of the NACs in California and LBI (Long Beach Invitational--I won't be there, but several clubmates will). Most of the time it's Texas, or the South East in the midst of summer. In Texas it's just unnaturally hot, in the South East it's unnaturally hot and humid too. Or, it's upstate New York, or MInnesota in Winter.

    The Delights of Bistol

Hey Boo Boo I'm off to Bristol this weekend I can hardly wait. I'm looking forward to the poor taxi service, the drab (filthy, mingin' - take your pick) BnB, the odd locals and of course I've got wonderful Virigin trains taking me there.

    Ahh the delights...

The venue is not in the nicest part of Bristol... (i.e. in the middle of a housing estate in the middle of nowhere).

Have you tried flying to Bristol? I believe that, if you book early enough, you can get some good deals: comparable/cheaper than train fares. A number of the Scots I speak to fly down (a number of them flew to Stanstead to go to Essex last week).

Bristol people can be a bit funny: I love the accent - one of the most "un-intellectual" sounding in the country.... :-)

Still, can't complain - its my local Open (less than 20 miles down the road from where I live). Ah, reminds me, am supposed to help with setting up pistes on Friday night :-(

I would fly only I'm [un]lucky enough to be an ex-railways employee who's managed to hold onto his travel pass. Virgin Trains maybe bad but they're free.

Does anyone know whether, if one stays in a hotel outside of Disney World and commutes, they will insist that you pay to get into the park every day?

Apart from that, I surrender the thread to the Brits...

i dont believe they make you pay to get into 'disney world'... because you actually arent in any of the theme parks.. .if you havent been to disney world... they pretty much own about a county spaced size of land just outside of orlando... and have theme parks scattered about... you actually wont be in the amusment parks while fencing but at their wide world of sports complex which i s adjacent to their race track... .about the only thing i can see them charging you for is parking... but im not sure about that.

    Thanks.

    No, never been there before.

Checked on reserving a room for 4 nights at the USFA-assigned hotel, quote came back at over $400. I don't THINK so! Guess I'll have to call their non-toll-free reservation number to see if the USFA has a discounted rate. Otherwise I guess it's offsite for me...
