I don't understand. There aren't people outside my window screaming their heads off. How could the Phils have won and I'm not hearing anything?
Oh right.
When I was young my dad told me that he had never seen the Phillies win a game and that he was sure it had something to do with him. We always left in the 6th or 7th inning and drove home with the radio on something else to give them time to turn the game around. I've never seen them win a game. Heck, I don't check the score during a game or express my devotion in any way.
At some point much later in my life I realized that my dad, who likes to go to bed early and get up early, may well simply have come up with this story so that we could have a decent bedtime.
After a lifetime of not watching, not checking, and not cheering, I watched tonight's last half a game and finally saw them win. HECK YEAH!
But now I live in Austin and nobody's cheering along with me. sigh.
As much as I wanted to see the Rays win the series, I'm impressed with the Phillies. It's a good team, and it deserved to win.
Now it's just a matter of making everything right with the world by having the New York Yankees win the World Series in 2009. Because, really, that's the way it should be.
With only the last three innings being played last night my seven year could actually stay up and see the game. It was really fun to watch them win with him - he has followed the entire season and was so bummed that all the games were on so late.
I am thrilled that the Phillies won, and I could watch it with my son. His excitement made the 50 minute line for a t-shirt worth it.

A Philly School District bus rolled up on Broad St. and police rolled out with batons and riot gear determined to cool things off. Fires were lit. Cars were turned over. Bottles were thrown at police. Glass, newspaper boxes and even the remains of a SEPTA bus shelter littered the streets. A drunk driver smacked into a police cruiser sending two officers in Center City to Hahnemann University hospital, police said. Over at Broad and Walnut, four men slipped through a busted glass door at Robinson Luggage Outlet swiping about half dozen pieces of luggage, according to Philly.com. Police were on rooftops and in riot gear at all the hot-spots.
Not getting any work done today - the parade route is right outside my window and the crowd is already gathering and loud.

I'll say.
My office is a block away and I can still hear the yelling and beeping.
Walking in before 9, I was amazed to see the streets already lined, when the parade starts at noon. I was sceptical when they estimated over 2 million people, but there's easily a couple of hundred thousand out already--without counting the people down in and around the stadiums.
I was outside for a bit and retreated back to my office - crowds that big make me nervous. It was tough to get any pictures from my angle - although I have a great one of Nutter with the trophy - and they moved past so quickly. All of my fellow staffers were snapping pictures too, so we are all going to share.
It was fun.

My school was missing about half its students today.
I make a reverse commute--I live in the city and work in the suburbs--and this afternoon SEPTA cancelled the regional rail service into the city so they could stack up trains to take the three million people back out of the city.
Fortunately, the high-speed line was within walking distance so I wasn't marooned.

Lucky you, even with the extra cars it was still a four hour wait.

I feel like an utter doofus. Even a couple days later, the photos of the parade and of the game still make my eyes get this strange tingly, moist sensation going. Wow. Seeing my city come together like that is just amazing. I would give a lot to get to be there and feel that. I can't remember which news site it was, but somebody had an upended panoramic shot down Broad Street as the parade passed and the crowds came off the sidewalks to fill in the street. A sea of red. Even the Mummers Parade doesn't get that kind of turnout.
Between this and the impending election I've been having a very hard time concentrating on _anything_ lately!
