fruit of the loom

OK, here's a bizarre question.

Saw an old timey commercial for fruit of the loom yesterday.

Brought back a question from my younger days.

Obvioulsy one of the guys is an apple. Two of the other ones are grapes(green and purple).

Just what the hell is the brown leafy guy supposed to be? Tobacco? Sure doesn't look like anything I'd want to eat.....

Maybe some kind of mutant raisin, or a date?
