    Free tournament software?

My club has used PointControl for the past several years to run our tournaments, a great, simple, straightforward free fencing tournament program. However, my laptop finally bit the dust and the other person with the software graduated. PointControl is no longer available to download online, and now we have no tournament software! We have a tiny budget and it's going to take some time to get the money to actually buy software--and a tournament coming up next weekend. Does anyone know if there is any more decent, free fencing tournament software out there? We're running two tournament simultaneously, and it's going to be a bear to try to do it manually.

Run a mock tournament before you try to do the real thing--- it's obvious once you get used to it, but it's designed to WORK, not to look pretty. There are also a lot more options than you'll need.

Is there any software out there that is mac compatible?

I used the search function and found a thread about this but it's over a year old. I shot an email to the guy who does fencing time. I'll see what he has to say.

When it comes to Mac compatibility, the year-old thread is probably pretty accurate. One or two developers have tweaked some things in the past year, but I don't seem to recall any entirely new software.

You might just want to look into virtualization, which has gotten better in the past year.

    engarde question

I'm having trouble entering pool bout scores. I feel I'm missing something. It keeps giving me errors that either "victory with a score smaller than the defeat -- symmetric removal" no matter what value I put in the other pair if I use the victory button and "the symmetric pair is not a victory-- symmetric removal" no matter what combination of numbers I put in (maximum score of 5). What am I doing wrong?

..... You put a V if the victory was at 5, and type.... W, i think, if you've got a less than 5 victory.

If that's not working, you might have a nonstandard way of recording scores I don't understand.......

This is the only mac software I could find. Still in development

    http://www.planche.de/en/planche/mac/

The other option is to try running under an emulator.

[Disclaimer: I'm the guy who wrote Fencing Time.]

    Check out Fencing Time: www.fencingtime.com

The free trial version of Fencing Time will let you run small tournaments (1 event with 15 people or less). If you need the full version, it's $50 and can run events of virtually any size.

Fencing Time was designed specifically for USFA tournaments (unlike Engarde) and actually exists (unlike Planche). It is the most widely used tournament software in the US.

Currently, it's only available for the PC, but I know that people have successfully run it on a Mac under the various virtual environments available.

If you have any questions, you can contact me directly.

Is this the same Dan Berke that fences out of RCFC?

I don't really want to put any windows environments on my mac so I was wondering if there was a native mac version in the works or if I should stop holding my breath.

I'm not aware of any Mac-native tournament software. I looked into porting FT to the Mac some time ago, but it was a far bigger task than I thought it would be. With the long to-do list I currently have, I doubt I'll get to a Mac version anytime soon.

I fence out of MTFC during the summers when i'm not at school. I think you bumped me out of a tourney a while back, haha.

Well I suppose that I may just have to run some windows software.

I am going to try running fencing time under WINE, and will report back.

I have Parallels and XP on my MacBook. Seems to work fine.

Orange Coast Division uses Fencing Time and used it for the LBI.

During part of the day we have three different competitions going at the same time and it is easy to switch between the different events.

Here is one of the outputs from Fencing Time for one of our events. As you can see it gives complete detail.

    http://www.ocfencing.org/2008oct19epee.htm

This was an A2 Epee event going on at the same time as an B2 Foil event and a C2 Sabre event with a total of 114 fencers.

    Some nice features:

We can customize the logo at the top to the Orange Coast Logo or one of the clubs that sponsors some tournaments.

We can customize how we output registration. We can do it in alphabetical order and list what piste they are going to. This was wonderful at LBI when we had over 20 pistes in two rooms.

We can set up pistes by quadrants.

We don't have to put in V or D. All we put in is the touches scored. Unless it is tied, it knows who has the victory even if it is 1-0 or 1-5. If there are any ties it will request who won.

We can usually go from the last pool bout to calling out the first DE bouts in under 5 minutes.

Considering we only have 8 strips, I don't think we could function without Fencing Time with over 100 fencers that we have on a regular basis.

Of note: We have 100% go up to DE's.

TournamentMaker might work for you, too.

    How'd it go?

I've recently tried to run the trial version of Fencing Time v2.11 under WINE.
My system is a Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop running Kubuntu 8.10 (w/ KDE 4.1.3) and Windows Vista (Home Premium SP1) in a dual-boot configuration.

I updated to the current version of WINE (1.1.11), set the version compatibility to XP, downloaded/installed the .NET 2.0 framework (which went smoothly), then downloaded and installed FT (which also went smoothly).

However, FT refuses to run. I've attempted to execute with both the desktop icon and directly from the .exe file the directory.

Any suggestions for addressing this issue and/or getting FT to run in (K)Ubuntu (or Linux in general)?

I just tried to install/run TournamentMaker, mentioned above, but it does not install on my system.

    The error given is:
    "Unhandled Exception
    Error Number: 0x8000FFFF
    Description: Unknown Error

    Setup will now terminate."

We use Fencing Time for our tournments, it is really easy and straightforward to use.

Engarde is a decent program, but annoying to learn, especially with french instructions. The Ontario Fencing Association has a good primer on it though -

I heard a rumor that Gary Hayenga wrote a mac only tournament software a few years ago, might try and poke around for that.
