Array Idea for Craig/ShyHeidi Not my idea, just putting this up here for attention: Thanks are to MikeHarm.
On "You're being watched", he mentioned that a little chat window at the bottom of the screen (or maybe something detachable, or just a link to a chat) would be cool - I agree! I think an actual fencing.net chatroom would rock. What does everybody think of the idea? Craig and ShyHeidi, especially. It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag. - Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC -

Array I think it would be good for it to say in who's on who is in the chatroom part if they put in a link to it. -

Array Well I think a chat room would be really cool, we've had this discussion months ago, if anyone remembers. The down side is that it might take away from the board, less people would be posting things for all to read because they'd just say things in the chat room instead. I still think it would be a neat idea, but I think if we make Craig do that, it really will be (as I've always felt it was) 2 separate sites molded into one. I think already that it could just as easily be split off into 2 sites, 1 for the informational fencing news, etcetera, and one for the forum. I mean, at least the way I use the site, it's either for the information that I come to the site, or the forum, rarely both at the same time.
...As some have said, the forum really would be better suited to a top nav, instead of the side nav, although the side works perfectly fine for the rest of the site, IMHO.
Um... There, how was that? I sorta dodged around answering your question, didn't I? And now, after that not-so-conclusive conclusion, I think I will go to bed. Goodnight.
(...I need to stop making all these suggestions. Poor Craig!) -

Array Suppose a chatroom sort of thing was done in a way that didn't take away from the discussions on the board.
For example, suppose it was made possible to do online fencing seminars. You could have it split so the top half was some sort of web page sort of deal, with pictures/links/video clips that could be changed as the moderator wanted as things progressed. The bottom would be chat with the moderator having control of who asked questions and the flow of things.
If you could pull it off it might be able to bring in a lot more people from all over the world depending on who you'd get to do them and possibly a source of additional revenue for fencing net with entrance fees and such. -

Array shy: control yourself. i did the same thing to someone and it sort of wacked us both out of control. maybe sit back for a little while a see how it goes before you go all out bonkers and put everyone on your new party dress. it's like having too many lipsticks: which one do i wear, until you hate them all, and buy new ones, or having too many foils, until you break them all and then replace them, one by one. i think it's time to sit back and watch the results for a few months. -

Array Yes yes, very true. I at least need to make new buttons though. But as I'm looking at them, half of them I really think would be better suited as text links in the first place... ... ... -

Array Time... From the bottom of the board...
"All times are GMT. The time now is 12:35 PM."
Maybe I'm just being dumb, but isn't that British Summer Time? True GMT at the time of posting is 11:35, since not everyone has daylight savings time.
Ok so I'm just being picky! I wish I could think of something witty to write here. -

Array ok, but that still doesnt resolve my petty and pedantic comment... I wish I could think of something witty to write here. -

Array I adjusted the gmt time offset so that my local time would come out correctly.
Shy - pm or email me your thoughts on buttons/links. We'll work that one out.
For a chat area - I'm looking into some ideas for it. Enough people have asked that it may be worthwhile. Which would be preferred - a chat area, or an "instant message" type system? (so, one on one conversations, or many to many conversations?)
For seminars, etc. - Neat idea. Not sure of how to do all of that, but I'll look into it. (don't expect it soon though).
Thanks for the suggestions.

... Both? I vote both.
You know how on AOL you can join any public chat but if you only have AIM you can only join private chats? I think, if we had IM and private chat, but not public chat, then it would be really cool and wouldn't take too much away from the forum. You could invite people in, and stuff, but you'd still have to use the forum to talk to everybody. Then you could do what MikeHarm said on specific dates and pre-scheduled times, then everybody could participate at those times. It would be really cool. It would be a huge task though.

Array I would have to say Instant Message. For one that's about all I ever use any more, and two if you have more then one or two people on that are part of your list you can make a little private chatroom, and invite everyone. That way it's the best of both worlds.
Are the pm's working on here? cuz I'm either not getting them. Or everyone jsut doesn't like me.

The ability to IM doesn't automatically let you private chat. Okay, so that's another vote for my suggestion, more or less, anyway.
