"Gia" Kvaratskhelia (GEE-uh Claw-duh-SKELL-ee-uh), the Notre Dame varsity foil coach, will join Wendell Kubik and Andrei Samorodov for a coaching clinic at the Alamo Fencing Academy. The clinic is currently scheduled for the weekend of April 3-5, 2009.
Please respond to the survey above so that we can plan better for this and other USFCA coaching clinics.
The location will be the Alamo Fencing Academy. Registration and Info will be available in the near future on AskFred.net.
Please put this on your calendar. USFCA Moniteur and Prevot practical exams will be given on Sunday morning. Remember you must take and pass the online USFCA written Moniteur or Prevot exam before you can take the practical.
You must complete the online USFCA written exam before you arrive for the clinic, if you would like to take the practical exam, so please start working on it now. See www.usfca.org.
There will be training and practice to prepare the Prevot and Master candidates to take their exams at Alamo Fencing Academy in June 2009.
Please contact me by PM or post in this thread with questions.

Reason: additional-update June
I've never been coached by Gia, nor do I know what he'd do as a coach trainer. However, he's both engaging and knowledgeable, and was always gracious when I had questions about developing competitors in a middle-of-nowhere environment.
If you're interested in improving as a foil coach, I suspect this will be a good thing to attend. If I can spare the resources (time & money), I'll try to go.
Is the information here correct? The USFCA website says that the fee for the Moniteur practical exam is $25, and that there is no time limit, whereas the document linked above states the fee is $35, and the practical exam for one weapon will be 45 minutes.

First point...you can attend this clinic and you don't need to take any exams! If you would like to take the USFCA Moniteur exam the following info applies. You can observe the practical exams on Sunday, if the examinee agrees to be observed by other than the examination board.
The fee for the Moniteur online written exam is $25 with a 2 hour time limit. This should be taken at home on your computer and must be passed with a score of at least 75 before you attend the clinic.
Practical exam is given at the clinic. Where does it say on the USFCA website that the Moniteur "practical" exam is $25? We may need to correct that.
The Moniteur practical exam for one weapon is $35 and should last approximately 45 minutes.

Reason: Addition
It's been about a month since I posted this clinic. It is getting close to the time that I will need to make some decisions. Looks like the "No" votes are winning. Anybody else interested in this clinic in April 2009?

Even the epeeists at Notre Dame want to take lessons from him. If I ever start coaching seriously, he's one of the first people I'm going to.
I wish I know him better. He's Gia Abashidze's student and I worked with G.A. in epee for years. I've seen G.K. give lessons and they look somewhat like G.A. lessons: engaging, technical and fun. Basically everyone loves him and the fundamental knowledge transcends to any weapon.
It is time to sign up for this April 2009 Foil clinic with Gia. I confirmed with him this past weekend at NAC D that he is planning to attend.
We need to get some numbers for those coaches who will attend so that we can make preparations.
Please register at the link above on AskFred.net
We will be giving the Moniteur exams on Sunday morning but, the focus of this clinic is to prepare those coaches who intend to take the Prevot and Masters exams at clinics later in the year.
Please check the recent (winter edition) American Fencing magazine for dates and locations of USFCA clinics.

Any chance of getting that (and more) information on the USFCA website?
There's a clinic 20 minutes from my house. Other than the dates and location I don't have any information about it. Or know of a way other than direct questioning of the organizer of obtaining additional information at this time.

He should be able to get that stuff on the website for you.
Online membership registration and payment is finally available on www.USFCA.org. You can also register and pay for written tests online.
Unfortunately, clinic registration is not yet available so please use the AskFred link above for the Gia Foil clinic in San Antonio.
Remember to register and take the written test online before the clinic if you plan to take the practical exam on Sunday, April 5, 2009.
Practical exam registration and payment will be available on usfca.org in a few days.

It is subtle....and so is my point. Your USFCA info is only as good as your region's representation.

Oiuyt: please post any information you find out about this clinic, or ask Dayn to post some details.
Sorry, forgot to follow up here after talking to Dayn.
He didn't have any details. He and Andy Ma are/were still looking for presenters.
I'll see Dayn again this weekend (nice thing about the collegiate circuit is that you see people throughout the season even on days when your teams aren't fencing each other) and I'll see if there's any additional information.
