new to this thread Hi all,
I am a volunteer teacher/coach at 2 (sometimes 3) high schools and a night school. Working with folks from ages 8 to 98 (so far) has been quite a trip.
My 3 would have to be
1) have fun -- the students have to have some fun while they are learning. I mix in games like Steal the Bacon (using fencing gloves for bacon) for teamwork and quickness. We also have a drill they all seem to like (once they get the hang of it) -- get a partner and a pencil without a point (a capped marker works well), each fencer touches his/her side of the pencil with fencing hand index finger. They must practice footwork without dropping the pencil. They begin to get the idea of using their arms and legs to assist in the adjustment of distance, not so stiff after a bit.
2) tell stories. What brought them to fencing, how you got started, the history of the weapons and odd tidbits of trivia about fencing
3) definitely have them take turns in leading footwork and exercises while you work with them.
Remember, I'm working with folks who saw it in a movie and thought it looked interesting. I want them to have fun and stick with it until they reach you all.
Cheers -
