Oprah Show - Disappointed in the Coverage for Fencing! Just finished watching Oprah's Olympic Coverage on her premier show that aired September 8th. While I was thrilled to see the Smart's get some airtime with a brief clip about their journey to win medals, no other fencers got a mention. Wasn't the fact that the US Womans Sabre team swept the medals enough to get a mention ??????????? (Isn't Oprah all about empowering women?)
Oprah made a point to mention other teams (for example when the mens basketball team was introduced - the womans at least were introduced as well.)
I know there are time constraints in TV but a brief 15 second acknowledgement to the team that swept the medals would have been nice. -

Array My inside information was that only Mariel from WS would be there and I didn't see her. The only other fencer I saw was Tim.
Not likely to mention WS if no one there or if only one of the three. Whoopee! My avatar is back. -

Not likely to mention WS if no one there or if only one of the three. One of the other fencers is in law school and the other one is in her first year of college.
They have lives. Mariel is not in college and has time to do these things.

The Momster But the show was taped weeks ago! (Supposedly right after the close of the games).
Were all the fencers not invited? -

No mention of 6 fencing medals. Saw James and Keeth, and Erinn, I think. Didn't catch any glimpse of Tim at event--only in the video with Keeth. -

Perhaps someone should fire off an e-mail to a producer there. Surely they'd check their e-mail more than a bulletin board. -

Array USOC/USFA media guy Cecil Bleiker notified the fencers on August 25, and then again on the 28th.
Still not a lot of notice, but that's TV for you... "Sometimes we, as coaches, get into that dictator mode where you just tell and you don't listen and you don't try to understand them." Tom Izzo, Mich. St.
