They're not exactly the same as perfectly good words shortened for the convenience of the writer.

( That said, the remark was still humorously ironical. )
Bureaucracies often deserve the insult of being referred to by an acronym.

    Och, what a gentle rebuke...

Yes, you are right, those ( like "DJ" ) are acronyms, not abbreviations...
Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you!

Technically, they're not acronyms, they're initialisms -- unless they are pronounced as a word, not just by saying the letters. For example, "laser" and "scuba" are acronyms, but "IBM" and "FIE" are initialisms (unless you pronounce "FIE" like the word "fie", which I could understand.)

No rebuke, acronyms (and initalisms ) are a type of abbreviation.

Initialisms are evil enough they don't deserve to be correctly named, so I'll keep calling them acronyms. (That's my rationalization, and I'm sticking to it.)

Nope - I'm not doug. (But I like doug!) As others mentioned, Doug is my coach.
