Array I know people who are into it way more than I am... intimidatingly so. So I usually don't bring it up. -

Array I consume enough British media that I'm sometimes confused where I actualy am.
Various things that I either seek out on my own, or have imposed upon me regularly:
Dr. Who, QI, Just a Minute, Top Gear, Fifth Gear, The Gadget Show, Dragon's Den..... BBC news stuff, various BBC4 Radio stuff.....
It was a good several years of most of my friends watching Dr. Who before anyone thought to include me. As such, I'm just catching up. -

Array A definite yes!
My first Doctor was Eight (Paul McGann); I started with the movie. I also liked Nine (Christopher Eccleston) and Ten (David Tennant), and what little I've seen of Four (Tom Baker).
So...
1.) Who is your favorite Doctor, and why?
2.) Who would you like to see as the next Doctor, and why?
3.) Who would you like to see as the next companion(s), and why?
4.) What do you think of the spin-off series (Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures)? -

Array I am STILL blown away by the fact that the BBC actually gives Dr. Who a sufficient BUDGET to do what they've done since restarting the series.
The writing is excellent ("Blink" and "Girl in the Fireplace" were excellent), the effects are actually believable, and both Eccleston and Tennet are great...kinda prefer Tennet in some ways....but for sheer angry emotion....Eccleston in "Dalek."
"You....would...have....made...a...good....Daaaale k." Greatest line in the series...ever. -

It's all the more surprising considering the snooty attitude that the powers at be have toward SF shows. Here it's considered to pander to the general populace and TV of late has been a constant round of middling to poor reshashes of things that have been done to death ("period" drama, stupid reality tv, poor sitcoms etc). Dig back a couple of decades and you used to find really decent SF on the UK TV (albeit normally with rubbish FX).

Here we are going to disagree. The episodes you mention are indeed very good (more anon) on the other hand most other episodes are highly variable in terms of drama, acting and script. The main problem appears to lie with RTD. Thankfully he is no longer the producer and the guy who wrote your mentioned episodes is now in charge. I can only hope that he does a lot to improve the show.
Before the inevitable bleating about how good RTD is I would like to point out that I have never had a problem with the way in which he revived the show. The first two series were generally very good but it has to be acknowledged that the last couple of series were mediocre at best. Too many soap elements and overused plot devices had crept in. One of my biggest disappointments was RTD fluffing one of the best Who baddies being played by one of the UK's most interesting actors (The Master).
And before someone else makes the usual "but it's for kids" comment. That is not an excuse.
"You....would...have....made...a...good....Daaaale k." Greatest line in the series...ever.
I prefer the exchange between the Daleks and the Cybermen. That entire exchange is one of the best moments of any of the series (and one of the few times RTD excelled himself). -

I used to watch Dr Who a very long time ago. Way back with cardboard sets and the original Darleks. In black and white.
Scripting was often great, with people like the late Douglas Adams being a writer.
I don't watch very often now, but do find the Tennant's real life Scotting accent so amusing compared to the Dr's. -

Array I like the new doctors (both of them) but unfortunately I was first introduced to Dr. Who with Tom Baker in the lead. His great coat, scarf, hat and amazing smirky smile held me enthroalled even through his Andric companion phaze. I really love the fact that they have brought back Sarah not once but three times now (not to mention allowing her to have her kids show spin off).
Long Live Dr. Who! "Rub her feet!" - Lazarus Long, Time enough for Love, Robert A. Heinlein "Never moon a werewolf."

Torchwood, it is for a much older audience than SJA in my opinion, and even older than Doctor who, as to who can watch it...I would see 10 year olds watching Doctor who, but not allowed to watch Torchwood, while 7 year olds can watch SJA while have to have someone watch Doctor who with them. I just enjoy all three. ( Doctor the most...obviously.) My sign is vital

I've recently been watching the restarted series, so there's a lot I'm sure I don't appreciate as much as I could as if I'd watched some of the other seasons, but I'm definitely enjoying it. I've gotten through the first two seasons and just watched the Christmas special start of season three. Rose and the Doctor's moment at the end of season two was one of the only times I've legitimately had to make an effort not to cry from a TV show. Similar Threads -
