Array Olympians On Oprah There will be an Oprah coming out soon featuring many of the US Medal winners from the Olympics.
The show is supposed to focus on Michael Phelps and Nastacia Lukin. The other medalists will be in the backround standing on risers. Isn't that nice??
Many US Fencers have agreed to appear.
It should be aired the beginning of September.

Who will appear and when??? Of course, you'll let us know when and who will appear, right?.....especially, Becca! Since I missed most of the post-O's interviews with the US fencers, I'll be curious to find out if Oprah will talk to the fencers. -

She isn't going to do it.
It will be interesting to see if there is anything beyond Michael Phelps and Nastacia though. I think Ms. Lukin is probably the best gymnast I've ever seen in my life. She just adds a certain elegance to it all.
Amazing.

You mean, she's not flocked by her fans at Duke and has people goo-goo-ga-ga-ing over her Olympian status? No guys who want to carry her books? No paparazzi? No one asking for autographs? You should fire her agent! -

Array "Nastia Liukin", FWIW
And good for Becca. It's one thing to tell people you're just a regular person outside of your susperstar status in a particular world (IE fencing) it's a completely different, and more difficult, thing to actually live it. N a s t i a L i u k i n.... stick darn it.
No matter how you spell that woman's name she was absolutely amazing. Gymnastics has always been one of my fav O sports.
Becca is pretty darned happy at college. She gets a little special treatment but tries to nip it as soon as it begins.
She says other college students have been out trying to save the world and all she does is hit people with metal rods well. To her it is not the same thing.

Does anyone else find this insulting and belittling, especially from one our Olympic level athletes? Maybe it's just a sign of youth but it bugged the crap out of me. Use the moulinet, no one sees it coming... JK. -

Seems like a rather reasonable sense of perspective. -

No, it is understandable to have a bad day and say something like that, especially to your mother. It is not like she said it to the media.
I think we all know being an Olympic athlete is so much more than just hitting someone with metal sticks, swimming extra fast, jumping high, etc.... -

Array Yeah okay, that makes sense. It also seems like for many people that they don't realize the importance of the work they're doing until they have moved on to something else. Use the moulinet, no one sees it coming... JK. -

R- Unfortunately that's all I know!

I don't find it insulting at all....in the greater scheme of things, winning an Olympic medal in a niche sport -- while a great personal accomplishment -- is trivial compared to doing something that could potentially held people in the world.
I think it shows that Becca's head is on fairly straight. -

Array I'd say we are taking ourselves entirely too seriously if we think that playing a competitive sport, no matter how successful we are at it, is the equivalent of feeding the hungry, comforting the afflicted, or providing opportunities for the oppressed.
I think fencing is wonderful fun. Don't get me wrong. But winning a world medal, while pleasing, isn't be nearly as rewarding as knowing I've made a difference in my classroom and my community to some kids who otherwise wouldn't have made it.
I admire her for saying it. That shows excellent perspective and good parenting. It's not easy to go against the flow these days. "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. -
