This went out as an email blast this evening, but I'm cross-posting here for greater distribution...

A Message from the US Fencing officers

Greetings from your new officers!

It痴 the start of a new quadrennial, with all that a new beginning means: opportunities for a fresh start, the chance to try new approaches, plus the ability to build on past successes. Our Olympic Team痴 results in Beijing are to be celebrated and cherished; there is nothing to compare with US flags flying high over the heads of our athletes.

We have much to build upon, but also many challenges ahead. We致e determined that a different organizational structure will help us to meet those challenges. Mark Stasinos will be the vice president with responsibility for organizational development, which will include the Tournament Committee, the FOC, divisions and sections and related areas. Jerry Benson will oversee resource development, which will include, among other areas, fund-raising and marketing and support for clubs. Ro Sobalvarro will take the lead in athlete development, with responsibility for our High Performance program, youth development and the Veterans Committee. Greg Dilworth, our treasurer, will provide oversight of activities relating to budgets, audit and finance. Brad Baker, along with his duties as secretary, will take the lead regarding tasks relating to technology and scholastic and collegiate fencing.

As you know, we are facing difficult financial times. The budget adopted at the July Board meeting reflects efforts to maintain our programs within our means, with increases in fees and decreases in funding for various expense categories. As officers we, along with the budget and audit committees, will be monitoring our income and expenses to ensure accountability and transparency.

Over the next few months you'll be seeing changes in the way we go about managing the volunteer side of our enterprise. Committees will be smaller, with updated mission statements and rotating membership. We'll be setting up more task forces and advisory groups to address specific needs of the organization.

In that regard, we'd like to hear from you about your interest in serving on the following:

Parents Advisory Group葉o provide guidance and support for parents of fencers
Fund-raising Task Force葉o develop short and long-range fund-raising and development plans
Club Business Task Force葉o develop plans concerning resources that would be of use to club owners
Scholastic/Collegiate Task Force葉o develop plans concerning support of programs in schools, colleges and universities
Website Requirements Task Force葉o develop materials in anticipation of a request for proposals for an enhanced website

You, our members, have the energy, enthusiasm and expertise to make our organization ever better--please send an email with a brief statement of your interest and relevant background to volunteer@usfencing.org by September 10th, 2008.

There are a number of other initiatives under way葉he search for a new executive director, establishment of on-line registration, international activities, conversations with the USOC and high performance planning for 2012. Watch for updates on these and other activities in the coming weeks and months.

Finally, we need to hear from you. Please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?s...tBqCU4nw_3d_3d to answer a few questions that will help us to make informed decisions about US Fencing services and tournaments.

You can reach us at officers@usfencing.org. Please don't hesitate to be in touch.

Kalle, Jerry, Mark, Ro, Greg and Brad

Something that has been bugging me for a LONG time. The USFA has been addicted to cast iron procedures which sometimes don't fit the immediate situation. Everybody gets pushed into one framework.

We have to have reasonable, experienced people who have good judgement.

But they must be given some latitude in getting things done.

I realize that the cast iron procedures resulted from misuse under former circumstances.

I worked for the government for 31 years. We were put in straightjackets because we had to comply with ticky-tacky procedures because someone in the past had fiddled with the books or gotten an unfair advantage.

One person screws up and thousands are hindered by the consequences.

This new administration provides us with an opportunity to try to find a better balance. Allow the people in charge some latitude in getting the basic job done.

I am sure Kalle knows this situation as well as anyone, The bout committee processes have always seemed to me to be an extreme example.

I hope everyone took note of the email volunteer@usfencing.org.

If you've been a critic of the USFA in the past, now is the time to step forward and offer to do something about it.
