So where do I go from here?

Hi fellow fencers!

I'm 16 years old, and I have been fencing foil at my local park district for three years now. Fencing is really something I love and am enthusiastic about, and I want to find more ways to get involved, but don't know where to go or what to do--tournaments? ranking? I'm not exactly sure, any help or suggestions would be really great. Thanks!

I suggest you start by researching the clubs in your area. Go to US Fencing.org and select the find a club feature.

Also, in terms of tournaments, Askfred.net is probably the most comprehensive resource.

Or you could try looking through your division's website (can be found through USFencing.org) for schedules.

What kind of experience have you had, fencing in your local park district? Were you fencing with electric gear? Most competitions are fenced with electric scoring, but lots of recreational classes only use non-electric foils. (There are some novice events that are fenced "dry" but you have to look hard for them.) If you've been fencing "dry", you'll need to get electric gear and become familiar with its use before fencing in an electrically scored competition.

Who ran the classes you attended? That's probably the first person you should ask about this. And then look for local fencing clubs.

I have been fencing with dry gear, so that's a very good point. I'll start looking into electric... hopefully there's somewhere I can practice electric within an hour's drive, otherwise my parents won't let me go, but I'll check the web for that. I'll ask the person who runs my classes. Thanks!
