Any system developed will need to be done with the blessing of the USFA. It will need to meet the security and privacy standards that the USFA requires. And, for it to really have value, it will have to get access to the USFA data.
In terms of features, FRED is far and above more complete than any other existing system, and to create a new one with even half of FRED's features would (a) take some time and (b) be a huge waste of time and money.
Instead, adapting FRED to the requirements of the USFA would make the most sense since it is (a) a proven technology, (b) the established standard for local clubs/divisions, and (c) already has most of the features the USFA needs.
Trust me, progress is being made. Yes, that statement is intentionally vague.

If that is the only problem anyone has (which I doubt) then I think fixing that will be much easier than starting over, don't you? -

If that's the biggest issue FRED has, I'm a freakin' rockstar!*

Array I know that some NAC's have a huge attendance, could FRED actually handle that? "When Fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and bearing a cross." -

Besides, fatter hardware can easily be obtained, if needed.

Array As someone who was part of an informal study group to examine what would be needed for FRED to handle NAC registrations, the issues, while non-trival, are not exactly what you would call earth shattering.
A simple solution would be to liscence the FRED software with a couple of minor tweaks, and run it on a seperate machine. Would probably take all of, oh, about 3 weeks worth of work. That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again. -

Or was the REF (Reality Estimation Formula) of doubling the amount of time of the most conservative estimate already used in the original estimation figure?
Seriously though, the USFA has needed an online registration system for a long time. Any amount of progress would be a welcome in my opinion.
Later for now,

* it's not, and I'm not..... It is to me... so far. I'll ***** and moan some more once I use it more often for setting up events, which I will be doing with higher frequency. -

Actually, the formula for software development is to double the number value and step up to the next level of units (hours->days->weeks->months->years->decades->etc.) For example: original estimate = 3 weeks, actual time = 6 months :-) -

You forgot "quarters" between "months" and "years". -
