are there any upcoming competitions in new york? preferrably on long island? i'm new to fencing and i'd like to watch a competition to spectate, take pictures, and learn.

The best place to go would probably be a wonderful site we fondly refer to as FRED (Fencing Results and Events Database - click here). There you can find lots of information regarding fencing tournaments all over the country - in fact, you may want to select either Metropolitan NYC or North Atlantic from the "regional editions" menu, so as to filter out events which are a little bit further from home.

Be advised however that things may be a bit slow right now - the new season is just getting started and some divisions are still finalizing their Fall schedules.

if it isn't on askfred, you're not going to find out about it without being already inside the community.
