Array We did it!! The mission is complete! The daughter is in college.
My hub and I settled her in and got her the missing last minute supplies. She is so happy. She is very pleased she chose Duke instead of a big fencing school.
Phase two has truly begun.
Knowing how happy she is will make leaving her almost painless. All we all want is for our children to be happy and involved. She says college is better than the Olympics.
It's not so bad!

The Momster Good luck to Becca! I would say, however, that with her at Duke, plus M. Marx, plus some good new MF fencers, it may eventually become a "big fencing school." -

Array Yay! Tell your daughter that we all wish her good luck with her first semester of college!
All the freshmen here at my college will be moving in tomorrow!!!! I can't wait to meet all the new freshmen babies! "Fencing is a sport where physical attributes seem not as important as determination."

Array Hi Mo:
We did it too. Christopher is now at Penn State. Because he's in Army ROTC as well, he was able to move in a few days earlier than the rest of the freshmen. That was a great help. The ROTC cadre had a great picnic and all the new cadets were put into teams for team building competition. Those who passed the PT test (situps, pushups and the 2 mile run in the allotted times yesterday at 7 am!) were processed into the Army ROTC in the afternoon. What a ceremony on the 50 yard line at Beaver Stadium. By that time, he was comfortably moved in, already knows his room mate from the NAC circuit, and had gotten to know some of the cadets in his group. We left after picture taking and hugs goodbye. Where have 19 years with this child gone....it is a pleasure to see him move into this new season. We wish Becca all the best at Duke as well; I am sure they will see each other on the college circuit. -

Array We wish Christopher peace and happiness too and all the college kids here at fencing.net.
The time surely does go by quickly, too quickly if you ask me.
This evening I gave the kid a buzz and she and the rest of the Freshman class are at a Durham Bulls baseball game. How kewl is that?
The kid has left the farm and will never come back!!
We may see you at some meets... but it is mostly time to recover the family finances from the previous wild ride.

Tell Becca good luck. My son and I enjoyed watching her in the Olympics. He just started fencing and hopes to be as good as Becca some day. -

Array Yay! Now that your kid is done fencing, does that mean you and your hubby will stop wasting bandwidth on these forums?! -

Array So you don't like all those well-written eye-witness accounts of the fencing at World Cups and the like?
Personally I think those are gold. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array I hope Mo keeps posting, she's provided some good info for us.

I just keep looking at that and figuring it's a misspelling for "babes". -

Happy mom, happy mom, happy mom. Are you really happy or just pretending that if you act happy you will be happy?
I am still missing my kid pretty badly.

Array Congrats to all the parents and kids who have successfully weathered the transition so far.
This year, our youngest simply packed his car, hopped in and said, "I'll call you when I get there. Be about 7 hours if I stop for lunch. If I forgot anything, you can bring it Parent's Weekend. You ARE coming to Parent's Weekend this year, right? It's your last chance and you didn't come last year, so you better come this year. Besides, it will be entertaining to see you meet and hang out with my GF's parents for a couple of days. "
In short, the angst and separation anxiety passes much sooner than you would think.... and the next thing you know, they are out, back home, and job hunting.

Array Ours, also at Duke, is doing great. I'm not doing as well, the nest is REALLY empty -- she was 4th of 4.
The Duke move in was pretty good. The heat made it less than perfect. Traffic was pretty well handled, the move in crew was pretty good, and her room is huge, and very nice. The local Target was pretty picked over when we got there for the "now that we know how her stuff fits in her room, she could use one of those" trip. She says the 5 (count 'em) fans do a pretty good job of keeping them comfortable.
Classes are going well for her, the fencers are organizing their own practices, and she is up to 2 miles running in preparation for the first "official" conditioning, which is a 5K run!
So, she is happy, her mom is doing better than I, and I'm moping a bit, but happy and excited for her anyway. She is going to have a great year. I'll be okay, in a bit -

The Momster
Of course I miss him, but we'll see him for parents weekend. Then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then spring break, then summer. Kind of a graduated plan of letting go.
No, I'm really happy-he's happy, I'm happy. He's settling in, making wise decisions without us, which is what I've hoped for all along.
Don't be blue...she'll be back at home before you know it!
