2012 team???

So.....now that we're done at the games (and putting aside the poor perform, ance in some situations, we did VERY well), who on the current team is likely to come back for '12??

My guesses...Rogers and Cross will be back. We know that Sada and Keith Smart are retiring...probably Erin as well. Becca may be cutting back, don't know about Hanna or Westly.

My understanding is that Emily Cross has 3 semesters of undergrad left and one year of NCAA eligibility. After that she intends to enroll in medical school, I don't think we'll hear from her after next year. I hope I am wrong.

It's difficult to say. I know James Williams is retiring, or so he has said. Keeth and Erinn Smart proably will. I don't see why Seth Kelsey would since he's basically a professional athlete. Tim Morehouse I think is done.

You know what tho, this is kindof a difficult and useless exercise this far in advance anyways (obviously), as even if someone stays active there's no guarantee that they'll be on the 012 team anyways. In 04 who would have predicted Gerek Meinhardt would be our lone mens foil rep?

Also Purple, I have to say that it's kindof astounding that after all this time you still can't spell KEETH and ERINN Smart's names correctly. I don't mean to pick on you, it's true of alot of people, but I would think you would know better.

Sorry....I tend to go for the common spellings on names....

And the original question was mor about who on the current team may be coming back in 4 years, not necessaruly what young gun is coming up teh ladder.

He could be a victim of his spell checker.

Greg Chang was at Harvard Medical School before and after he was an alternate in Athens. He took a year off before the Olympics.

On the other hand - what team events will be excluded from London 2012 - that could predicate certain fencers' level of dedication.
Logically, should it not be Women's Foil and Men's Saber?

WF and WS were excluded from Athens 2004 - if they keep rotating through all the weapons, ME and MS would be dropped for 2012.

Or the IOC could just suck it up and award a full slate of medals....especially since they're dropping softball and baseball...

I just thought that the trend was going towards eliminating one 1 of each sex, but your point is quite more logical.

I would say it's more "fair" than "logical." It's only fair that each weapon take a turn sitting out.

However, I have much more faith in the FIE/IOC concerning themselves with TV ratings and overall popularity than fairness.

The policy is to eliminate one of each sex, so we don't in fact know which 2 will be eliminated next time.

After that, though, the rotation will be set, which will be a lot easier to deal with.

Glad to hear (if it's true) that the MS team is sticking around other than Keeth.

Was there a reason for Ivan Lee not being on the team this year? Did he get bumped out by the others, or did he just not go for the spot?

He went for it but did not make the team. Look for Daria Schneider (Saber) to make a push for 2012.

Let's face it, the US is the elephant at the tea party with the big bucks that it pays for hogging the TV. So all of these US fencing medals, interviews, Today show, etc. will go a lot further than Rene Roch's scheming to keep fencing in the Olympics and perhaps going from 10 to 12 medal events.

Marvelous time for the US to get 6 medals. The rest of the fencing world will benefit from this.

Gerek Meinhardt

Inasmuch as Gerek is only 17 and stated after the competition that he expected more of himself at London, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that he will try for a spot on the team again.
