-B This is true, just curious why are some saying one of the other team members stepped out of the box and that was the reson for the halt/hand raising? So, did the side judge raise his hand because Keeth went off strip or because one of the russians stepped outof their box?
One point of clarification for newer refs, the side judge raised their hand, that person did not call halt. If you notice on the replay, the ref awarded the touch to Poz/the russian team, then Keeth appealed and the side judge stepped forward making it obvious he raised his hand, hence the conversation/appeal-replay-annulment. -

Yakimenko stepped out of the box and was penalized during the ensuing argument, not during the touch.

-m When I was trying to watch it online that late I was more interested in the final result not details on what caused it. When it was being shown online the text notes under the video mentioned someone had stepped out of the box and 'implied' that was what caused the 'discussion'. And no, I didn't read every post, saw Bs post..... -

The video replay clearly shows Keeth off the piste before the final actions. They are clearly after the halt. The touch was correctly annulled.
-B 1.Having never had a privilege to fence with a video replay, my ignorance is somewhat understandable; so stepping off the side of the strip (not being anywhere within a 2 meter line) is a review able infraction?
2.Then why in a famous step off in gold medal MF bout in Athens it did not get reviewed? Randal : [after the fire at the Quick Stop] Terrorists?

That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again. -

Perhaps, assuming the side judge saw it/judged it to be relevant to the action. As George so kindly reminded us this summer, they are not side judges, they are in fact assistant referees. They are there to assist the referee and are in fact allowed to use their discretion in making calls. A step off the side could occur and they could choose to ignore it as they felt it was irrelevant to the action for some reason; similarly a fencer could have clipped their alligator clip to the wrong side or thrown a bell punch from an awkard, hard to see angle. In both cases the assistant ref may request a halt and penalty regardless of the the situation or venue.

Array At first I thought it was obvious that Podz had been screwed (to use the technical term). But, then, if you turn the situation around, if Keith had scored the touch, they would have annulled his touch for stepping off the strip a few steps back before the final phrase.
What's interesting to me is that when I have called halt in saber for a fencer stepping off strip, everyone typically looks at me like I'm crazy. -

Good point, but did they acquire additional power over last few years, or I just have not seen them exercise such before? Randal : [after the fire at the Quick Stop] Terrorists?

Array It's really been there all along. What is done in practice may or may not have been making use of what has been in the rules. T36. The Referee fulfils his/her functions with the aid of an
apparatus for the automatic registering of touches; he/she may
also be assisted by two judges watching for the use of the
unarmed hand or arm, substitution of the valid target, touches
scored on the floor in épée, leaving the strip to the side or the
rear or any other offence defined in the Rules (cf. t.120). Similar Threads -
