Fencing News & Media Aggregation Site

http://14meters.com

Built upon the newly open-sourced reddit code, 14meters is a community driven content aggregation site for the fencing community. Registered users can vote up the links they like, vote down those they don't, and everyone is free to submit found online content to the site!

We hope to use the site to help direct fencers pieces of interest on sites like fencing.net, mainstream media sites, and even the occasional youtube video.

Note that 14m is not an attempt to draw away from fencing.net, but complement it, allowing users to easily find interesting articles or threads posted here.

Feedback is appreciated. Let us know what you like and don't like, and what you would like to see that's not currently available. But most off all, please participate! Submit some links, and start voting

Do you want links to content that requires a subscription?

For example, fencing was nicely featured in the A-hed on the front page of Friday's Wall Street Journal, but access requires either an online or dead tree paid subscription.

My inclination is put everything up, if it needs a subscription, note it. If people don't like things that need a subscription, they'll down-vote it.

This is the right idea.

It's not about what we want, it's about what you want!

If you find material of interest to the community, submit it. And the community decides if it's actually interesting or not

I like the idea; however it's a little hard to take in visually. How about a header with a nice fencing image in it, sidebars with links to every fencing site you can think of (including Sabrecat!), and a news summary under each headline (kind of like an RSS reader)?

its based on the reddit code, which is very difficult to skin properly. plus, if the layout is good enough for a multimillion dollar company with millions of users, its good enough for me, for now.

What noodle says is true. And the reason it is successful is because the focus is on content. But because the content is also user submitted, the summary under each headline would also need to be user submitted. I feel this would only be a detriment to encouraging people to participate. We really want it to be as easy as possible to find interesting content as well as submit it.

So slide on back to the site, and submit the link to your webcomic

I can certainly understand if it is difficult to change the appearance. And while content is king, presentation still makes a huge impact in terms of readability and ease of use, and can make the difference between a site that is used and one that isn't used. So it isn't to be dismissed.

I think it's a worthy effort, so I'll stay tuned! Can you add an RSS feed?

I found it odd at first when I started visiting Reddit, but I very quickly adjusted to the presentation. *shrug*

Have there been other splinter uses of the reddit code that have gone live since it became open source? How different do they each look compared to Reddit?

the live versions are all exactly the same layout, skinned with different colors and occasionally different images.
