Learning the correct name of the latter institution might be a start.
| eh. That stupid S will be my undoing. I have no interest in JHU though, so it doesn't matter. If I were basing my college choices on mascots I would still have no interest in it (Blue Jays? Really?)

| Blue Jays are very cute, I must admit.
I was and still am in a similar situation with my parents. If you want something badly enough, you can get it. Question is, how much are you willing to pay? (Would your parents disown you or just ground you for a month??I guarantee that listening to your parents will help. If not literally, then it'll help your conscience before you decide mutiny as an option.

| Maybe you could get them to watch some bouts, and explain what is happening.
I think many people's dislike for fencing comes from presumptions about it.

| Just look into the sport and explain why you want to fence and all of the benefits of it. Make a list or even a presentation to show how great it is. Maybe that will change there minds. |

rdg- thanks for the links! | I think the coolest mascot is San Jose State U's, where the mascot is the banana slug.
First it is a slug OK. Second it is huge. I've seen them in the wild at long as your hand and thicker than two fingers. Plus they are bright yellow and crawl around in the redwoods getting stoned all day .... oops maybe that was me.
Anyway, SJSU sponsors some really nice fencing and they have a decent non-competitive fencing program. BTW, if someone says its competitive, I will stand down, but it looks to me like mostly classes.
Come out some time and see the campus. If you don't fall in love with it, you probably don't like redwoods.

Sam | I think you're confusing UC Santa Cruz with SJ State...
UCSC's mascot is the banana slug, SJ state is the spartans. |

| Could be they think that with the equipment in fencing and the cost of lessons, they will put an investment in and it will turn into another Lacrosse for you. I just hope it's not because they have some sort of "combat" problems with it.
The fact that you will be paying for it yourself shows your drive an that you are willing to personally invest. Maybe that will placate them. If not, then hey it's your money.
When I was younger, parental opposition was a sure fire catalyst for my interest in anything. |

In fact, one of my favorite places (outside the strip) is the Limestone Kiln park right next to Rouring Camp in Felton. This lady ranger told me about it right after she told me I was standing in poison oak. It is a day park with redwoods and a creek and banana slugs, with about a 5 mile round trip walk that is out of this world, and it is in the middle of Felton, but nobody goes there, except locals, and me. I guess that ruined the ambiance. Well, that was one tough looking slug.
See you guys on the strip. Maybe we can slug it out.......

| I think taking inititive and going out and supporting yourself is a really good first step. If you continue the way you are (supporting yourself to do what you like), your parents will eventually realize that you're totally serious about this and will begin to soften up. This takes a long time, but eventually, you'll get the financial and "emotional" support/approval you want from them. I had a similar issue when I started fencing. (Hs fencer as well) |

| When we first moved to Oregon I learned quickly not to run the garbage cans out to the curb barefooted when it was raining.
The first couple times I stepped on a slug I thought I would barf. When I got inside and saw yellow slug remains between my toes eeewwwww!!
They are really interesting though to see. There aren't any of them in Colorado.

| Make a Deal Ask your parents to let you do one class.
If you can beat one of them in a bout you get to do the next class. |
