| Women's Team Sabre The women's team sabre event is underway.
The US is the gold medal favorite and if the women continue to fence as well as they did in the individual event, then they can run away with it. The US women's team has won the gold medal in the world championships in 2005, silver in 2004 and 2006 but lost early in 2007, placing 7th.
The Ukraine and Russia will fence to face the US.
France will look to a better result today as all three French women fell in the round of 32. China, likewise, will be looking to challenge the US and French teams as they feature the world #4 in Tan Xue and #6 in Bao Yingying.
In early 1st round action, the US is ahead 20-3 with Sada Jacobson as the anchor.
The other matches are much closer at this point. Rus vs. UKR is 9-7 for Ukraine. China is up 7-5 on Poland.
starts out up 10-1 against South Africa. |

| Yeah - it's like kicking puppies out there - looks like the US women are trying to maximize the time between this match and the semifinals... Of course, as I type this, Ms. Zagunis has dropped three straight... I'll shut up now

| 30-6 after 6 - 14 minutes so far - mostly in hooking up and rehooking. Last three - Zagunis, Ward and Jacobson in that order, I think.

| Out of curiosity, does anyone know how the video replay challenges work in the team competitions?

| One of the Chinese fencers (Huang) looks hurt. Like, actually hurt, not soccer player hurt.

| Score 36-7.
Becca seems to have a boo boo on her thumb and helped the South African fencer hook up. That was cute...
The momster
Score now 40 7.
Sada will finish...

| 40 to 7 Jacobson up
BTW - anyone know where the RSA athletes are ranked in the world? I am assuming their qual was regional... They are just being outclassed. Still fencing hard, and even smiling a little, but out of their league it seems.
disclaimer - I know they would still kick my sorry out of shape and not good rear, but I'm not in the Olympics...

| Some sort of technical or non fencing related glitch, the fencers and ref seem to be just standing around waiting for something - an asseseur came over to Jacobson before to explain or ask what was going on (I couldn't tell which it was), but the score is stuck at 43-7, with an unexplained pause - Ms. Jacobson is taking a seat on the strip to wait it out.

| What was with that big delay just now? Video review?
I think it's interesting that both Ed and Arkady are allowed in the box with the team. |

| Back on, and a quick touch for the RSA fencer, Du Plooy - then Ms. Jacobson finishes her off with two straight. Match 45-8 for the US - hand shaking now.

| It was a sorry match anyway, really low energy. The RSA team seriously looked like a group of beginners when compared to the U.S which is so weird to see in the Olympics. |
