| Kleibrink leads Zhu 6-2 going into the second period, and scores with a riposte then an attack. Now 8-2 Kleibrink. Two more attacks, two more touches for Kleibrink. Now 10-2. A riposte, now 11-2.
Not looking good for Zhu.

| Kleibrink is in the finals 15-4. Looks like the break really hurt Zhu's fencing, but Kleibrink seems hotter than ever.
At 13-4 both fencers got their blades tangled in Zhu's wireless scoring head cord. It took them a really long time to get Kleibrink's blade out.

| Sanzo and Ota are up. Sanzo sneaks in a quick attack. Next touch Ota does the same. 1-1 with 2:20 remaining in the first. Ota scores again with an attack, a riposte, and an attack. 4-1 Ota with 1:45 left. Another attack from Ota and it's 5-1. Ota seems to have picked up on Sanzo's timing to devastating effect. Sanzo is adjusting and scores with a fick over Ota's blade, an attack au fer, an indirect attack, and a direct attack. 5-5 at the end of the first period.

| Nicely balanced between Sanzo and Ota- it's only when you watch these semis that your realise how unwatchably dire women's foil is.

| Ota's fleche is FAST!
(I'm talking specifically about the one that made it 7-5 for him, but I'm sure it's true in general).

| The minute break is decidely more quiet than Kleibrink and Zhu's break. The crowd is fairly subdued, even the Italians, who have been pretty loud throughout the day.
Ota scores with a riposte, 6-5 with 2:30 left in the second period. Both fencers are being a lot more careful now, and the action has slowed. Ota steals Sanzo's time with a fleche to make it 7-5 with 2:00 left. Sanzo scores with two quick simple attacks, now 7-7 with 1:45. A remise later and it's 8-7 Ota with 1:35. Ota attacks and scores, now 9-7 with 1:23 left. Sanzo scores with an attack 8-9.
This bout is basically coming down to whether or not Ota is guessing right on the tempo of Sanzo's attack and attacking just before he can launch his final action, or whether Sanzo can trick him and start first. There's not a whole lot of diversity in the tactics or actions, both fencers content to try to win this particular game of chicken. Naturally, now that I've said that, it's changing. 11-10 Sanzo at the break. I would like to see Ota win. I think he's fencing better.

| Can't believe Ota's mask is bringing up valid lights! There was one before I thought was dodgy, but the last hit was certain; Ota tested it and again brought up a green light. Faulty equipment could cost him...but I hope not.

| During the break while Ota was drying his mask, there was a slow motion replay that was just a closeup on Sanzo with his mask up and sweat pouring off his face. |

| Third period, and Ota fakes a counter attack and scores with a quick riposte. Sanzo figures it out and gets the next touch. 12-11 Sanzo. Ota throws out a long attack to tie it up. Sanzo steals Ota's trick and counterattacks before Ota can finish to make it 13-12. Ota gets a disputed (but pretty) riposte to bring it to 13-13. Sanzo gets the next touch to make it 14-13. Ota hits with a desperation counterattack at his own end line. 14-14 with plenty of time.
Ota wins the bout with a squirming attacking counterattack!
Edit: He wins it with the remise of a squirming, attacking counterattack. Good thing it was one light.

| What a bout! It gives me hope for the new timings; that's exactly the kind of excitement and dynamic fencing I like in foil.

| Sanzo and Zhu are up. Thankg God that long period of non-fencing is over. I'm referring to women's epee, of course. (Just kidding, the Na-Heidemann bout was great.)
Sanzo's up 1-0 and Zhu goes off his end line to make it 2-0. Zhu makes a quick attack off the line to make it 1-2.
Sanzo is pressing pretty hard with a semi-march for the most part, and Zhu keeps giving ground with what appears to be no plan at this point. 3-1 Sanzo at the completion of a compound attack.
It appears to me that Zhu was carded for covering, and it looks like the score is now 5-1, so I missed something somewhere in there.

| The Chinese crowd chants something during the break and Zhu comes out with what appears to be an answer for Sanzo's march. 6-6 with 2:30 left in the second period.
There are some really tight actions. They're not making the ref's job easy. Zhu doesn't appear happy with the last two calls for Sanzo that make it 9-7, but the crowd isn't disagreeing.
10-9 Zhu, and Sanzo is getting frustrated. I think he's going to freak out and fall apart.

| I think Sanzo loses two touches to being frustrated to make it 12-10, then recovers to get it to 12-12. Zhu fights back to make it 14-12 Zhu. Sanzo thinks he gets a riposte and demands a replay, but Zhu's off target attack is upheld. Sanzo scores with an attack. 13-14
The ref blows a call to make it 14-14 Sanzo (or maybe I didn't see something). I don't know if Zhu didn't have any reviews left or what. The crowd is booing. Sanzo gets a one light at the end to win it 15-14. The crowd boos some more.
Edit: Did anyone else see Sanzo's 14th touch? It looked to me like the worst call of the Games. I'll have to watch it again when I can, but did I miss Sanzo's parry?

| That touch that got Sanzo to 14 was a bad call. Zhu was robbed. The crowd knew it, and even my husband saw that action clearly, and he doesn't fence!!! |

| No way was that Sanzo's reposte to level at 14 all. Too bad Zhu had spent all his replays..
