| wow, I didn't notice Gerek was that young. Joppich, Sanzo, Kleibrink and Cassara still there :O
Kinda waiting for some cool and wild upsets like in saber. Maybe the crowds can lead zhu or lei to medals!

| Personally (and as a sabre fencer) was impressed. A foil fencer who seemed to value right of way, altho he did throw away his riposte too often. I think his footwork was not the problem altho obviously more precision would have helped. He would have been well served to mix in more straight attacks with the flicking hand actions he was making; at the least it would have prevented a couple of the preparation attacks against him.
But when you consider he is the younger than the second youngest fencer in the field by what, 5 years? And he had a bye, and won in the round of 32 convincingly, and had a pretty good bout in the 16? I can't be anything but impressed.

| Funny thing both Gerek and Zhu are listed on official website as 6 feet tall
Is it just me or Chinese guy was at least a couple of inches taller than Gerek?

| Looked to me like Zhu had a much more complete game than Meinhardt. Zhu was able to score with attacks, ripostes, attacks in preparation and counterattacks, while Gerek seemed to rely almost entirely on attack and remise (once the opponent adjusted to his big sweeping attacks, he had problems).
Still, a pretty promising performance from a fencer who just turned 18 - taking on a top 10 fencer on his Olympic home turf is a challenging assignment. |

| Too many bad flicking actions but very heartbreaking for Gerek. I was rooting for him....tough break. But hey he did get to go to the Olympics.

| Agreed here. Gerek only seemed to attack in one line. He needed to make another adjustment...oh well. Fantastic for him to make it so far, though! |

Thanks for the worthless Wednesday morning quarterbacking, and throwaway "compliment" to soften the criticism.

| Gerek is over 4 years (4 and a half) younger than then next person in the field. Considering when fencers peak and how long Meinhardt's been on the international senior circuit, I think this bodes well for his future.
After the bout he was in good spirits. After his T32 victory he was talking about how this Games is mainly a learning experience - he was nervous at first but felt no pressure and all of the coaches from the US squad told him to relax and have fun. They all know that he's young and developing.
Even so, 10th place at the Olympics is better than we've seen in a long time. Dan Kellner made the round of 16 in Athens as the #26 seed.

| Zhu seemed to set up a pattern of retreat on Gerek's attacks several times, then step in and catch him winding up. Seemed like 3 attacks like that after Zhu had 9 or 10 touches.
At least there's not a dozen of us spitting and moaning about him not looking in shape. He looked good.
Zhu just got his 7th touch against Cassarra the same way.

| Joppich and are tied at 9-9 right now. There haven't been a lot of runs. This has stayed close the entire time, and there's some excellent technical fencing.
It's now 10-9 Joppich on a nice riposte as Ota passes him, and Ota's face is betraying some fatigue.

| Results are great... but what exactly do I click on to see the videos?
I tried clicking "video" and then searched for "foil fencing video" and nothing came up..

| What was Ota's 15th point? I was watching action at the yellow strip and when I looked over there it seemed that the referee was going over the video and then it was awarded to Ota. |

| Spectacular finish to Zhu-Cassara - Zhu takes the last three touches to win 15-14. |
