It didn't happen, she didn't get a medal like BOTH of the other teams did in the finals. China and Ukraine both had four girls on the medal stand, not the US. Ed and Arkady both let the chance go by for Dags to also have a medal which she surely deserved with all the work and travel she put into the team. There was no one but the fencers themselves to get her in the bout and they of course are not coaches and don't know a darned thing.
That is the kind of thing that having a more even representation for all fencers on a team would cure.
Too much power? What do you think?
The Momster | The US could not be said to have a barely comfortable lead until Mariel held Carole Vergne to just one touch, opening the lead to 7 in the 7th encounter. And then the 2 last French fencers scored 10 touches, 6 by the last.
To have substituted Dagmara in for the last bout would have been reckless, really exposing the coaches to criticism. This was a MEDAL match. And even if they had the option, the other team has to be alerted one full bout ahead, so Dagmara would have had to be 9th, there was no option for her to be 8th where someone else could pull the bacon out of the fire. Would you want Dagmara held to blame for losing the Bronze for the US?
Much less likely under the new scenario where the coaches don't have the option, it has to be a medical reason confirmed by the official doctor. Would you want the US to be accused of flopping, as the Italians have been in the ME team thread?
Be happy that Becca has a Bronze, not leaning over backwards to spit and moan that Dagmara doesn't. It's a shame but that's life.

Maybe she'll lose one or two points, but she most likely could have gotten the last touch. All the anchor fencer needed to do was "twist" an ankle.

Firefox underlines misspelled words - just click and correct then, but it is starting to come out better not checked.

| Not to pull thread drift into this incredibly productive thread, but why do you say it doesn't work for you? Is the actual feature not working, or is there a dyslexic thing at work?
In my version of firefox (the most recent), I often have to right click in the text box, and check off "Check spelling" to get it to work, even though it's always supposed to be on. If that helps you, or anyone else who is spelling challenged.

Frankly, I feel that you are hurting more people than just Ed and Mariel. What about all those kids who look up to Mariel? Their idol is -how you are claiming it- a "fraud" because she only knows how to beat two people. Wow she sure made it a long why knowing how to beat those two people.
Just get over it and move on. If your daughter wants to go to the 2012 Games, she probably will have to go back to Ed, and then what? This whole thing starts up all over again, over unresolved issues? Have you tried sitting down in his office and talking with him?
-SuperDog- | Well, because I sit for hours at tournaments, I cannot help but eavesdrop on kids' conversations during tournaments. And since my kid is friends with fencers both at OFA and Nellya, I can guarantee you that "...those kids who look up to..." are not at OFA. When your older sister treats you like crap, you don't see a princess when she becomes prom queen. Again, this is primarily through the kids, but I would think now that the Olympic push is over, Ed might want to tend to his own house some, there are other "disgruntled parents" there who, for now, similarly feel "stuck". |

| AT dinner I stumbled upon a rather lengthy USA Today feature on WS Bronze - ironically all 3's plans were mentioned.
No surprises with Misses (?) Ward and Jacobsen, yet in regards to Ms. Zagunis it stated that she has no plans, but to take time off and rest - am I misreading it as a non-return to South Bend?
On the other hand I understand that Ms. Ward still has 2 Junior WC's left - simply incredulous.

What I do know is that one coach should not get the whole cookie.
It is time for the power of national coaches to be shared.

The Momster | Take your time with it. I understand the need to *****, and I think it's pretty human. On the other hand, we're entering a new quad, and while I don't know the entire situation, I think that the situation could be a lot worse, and I'm not sure what kind of protections we have against that. I want to make sure you guys use your powers for good as well as *****ing! : )
