    Opening Ceremony

    Holy Holy Cow.

I know it's early, but is this being shown live in US?

    Amazing.

It's being shown live in Canada on CBC (8:00 am Eastern). High Def really makes an impression!!

    Sorry, I couldn't resist...

I just don't really see the point.

Come to think of it if you enjoyed it then what did you actually enjoy?

They always remind me of broadway shows so I guess if you like them then maybe the opening ceremonies could be fun.

That said, even if you enjoy the spectacle I am not sure how they are relevant in the context. Athletes that have slogged their guts out to become the height of physical perfection Vs lots of people dancing around in spandex and feathers...

    To each their own.

A couple of nice mentions for fencing in the opening ceremony in the BBC commentary. Hungary and Italy's fencing history highlighted and a mention for Valentina Vezzali. Nice on-screen fact too about 107 of Italy's 494 medals coming from fencing.

I really don't know if I should try to reply, or just feel sorry for you.

Even if you don't appreciate pageantry and spectacle, I hope you can understand that the opening ceremony provides context and background that enhances the perception/reception of athletic performance.

The other side of the coin is the fantastic opportunity for cultural expression of the host country.

    .....

I really hope everyone takes the time to tune in...

I'll probably watch it from 7:30 until 10:00 when the WS bouts start on the website, then the computer is getting attached to the TV and we'll be watching the actual competition.

Yep, thats my plan as well...
That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again.

It's the new, kinder gentler Mr. E. That's what happens when you move to Finland, get lots of fresh air, exercise and 20 hours of daylight.

No worries for those who miss the old Mr. E... I'm sure he'll return in 6 months when he's got 20 hours of darkness and green grass is a distant memory.
