    Having a fencing-themed party

I saw an ad for this at our local YMCA pool. US Swimming is encouraging local swim clubs to host a pool party with big screen TVs to watch the Olympic action. The website also offers downloads, party game ideas, and a sweepstakes to win a giant all-expenses-paid party. It's an incredible recruiting idea, too! Aside from the fact that fencing isn't going to be on in prime time, how could we adapt this idea for fencing?

    From the Splash Bash website:

Celebrate the Olympic Games with your swim team and reward them with a USA Swimming sponsored U.S. Olympic Splash Bash! 500 teams have the opportunity to host a party. As a host, you will be provided with a party kit that will provide all the tools to make the viewing party great! It'll be the perfect platform to get your members to tell their friends/team members about how to get involved in USA Swimming and encourage swim team sign ups!

    Wieners on a foil?
    A giant fondue?
Do not forget to search everyone at the door for weapons. If they do not have any - give them some!
Anyway, lots of alcohol and sabres should provide enough entertainment...

Gee, I wonder if the USOC will start monitoring these parties and attempting to shut them down - like the NFL did with church-sponsored Super Bowl parties a couple of years ago... see this and other articles.

Okay, so let me get this straight..the bar down the street with twenty plasma screens (all under the dictated 55-inch mark) can bank on profiting big on the Super Bowl by people coming in and boozing it up during the game with no ramifications, but the Church who is more than likely charging nothing except maybe a pot luck dish to go along with punch and iced tea can't show the game because their TV is too big?

    Thats not right.

I think it's possible that this is all Kosher since they're sponsored by U.S. Swimming which is recognized by the USOC. The only people I could see being interested in shutting down such an event would be NBC, since they are the ones profiting from broadcasting the Games. If the IOC is true to their stated mission of sports and good will, they would rather encourage this type of thing.

But if someone was actually profiting from it by charging admission or selling something, that would be another story and I think they would not be as accomodating. They are well known to protect their imagery and intellectual property very aggressively. (See for example this article on Canada trademarking the word "winter" for the 2010 Winter Games)
