Kids show "iCarly" features fencing

I caught the tail end of this episode of "iCarly" on Nickelodeon. It features sabre fencing (and the inside of a fencing club) fairly prominently, and for once they're wearing masks and not swashbuckling around much. There are other criticisms to be made but publicity is publicity.

You can find parts 1, 2, and 3 of the episode on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx0Ky8K3CBU

Episode synopsis from TV.com:
Freddie's in need of some guy time, so he tags along with Spencer to go fencing. Freddie's a natural, but things get complicated when Spencer gets him involved in a match with the amazing Doug Toder. Meanwhile, Carly has to plan a dinner for her weird relatives, the Dorfmans, and with Spencer busy fencing, she might not get much help. Sam reveals that she has never read a real book, and a bet begins between her and Freddie: can Sam finish a book?

Yep my younger sister was watching it and i saw the tail end - it was pretty cool . It portrayed fencing not too badly as a sport.

Just saw this and noted that the star of the show, Miranda Cosgrove, does fence. Sounds like an ideal spokesperson for USFA, selling fencing to the younger set...

Hmmm, paging Capt. Slo-Mo...

Probably... Frank Sobisky was in it as one of the fencing doubles... he was (and may still be) at Swordplay, no?

Frank left for another club (Fortune???) a few months back.

And now that you mention it, I remember Kari talking about Frank being a doube...that's probably where I thought I sold the gear....I did not.

Saw it. If you are a fencing history doyenne look at the end: Alfred Hutton a circus fencer? Was Egerton Castle on the trapeze?

However, I think it's good pub and it's the right demographic.

I did see it. Realistic? The older woman slashing with a saber in each hand? Grabbing blades with your bare hands? Yeah, that will help out sport. Not.

You have to remember that the film industry DOES NOT CARE about accuracy, especially in a niche sport like ours...that's the sad truth.

So, I've been watching this... they're using sabres as point weapons! OMG! I'm not even going to point out any other things I've been cringing at, this is enough... and I don't even fence sabre!

Course, I agree with Purple Fencer!

Not when you consider the show is made for "tweens"

I don't remember exact words my daughter said when watching it, but it was along the lines of "This is so stupid" and "That's a coach? His form sucks!"

Granted, I haven't watched yet, but one can and should hit with the point in sabre, no? Not always, of course, the majority of the bout consists of cuts. But in and of itself, it doesn't seem so scandalous to me for someone to use a sabre as a point weapon.
