(And yes I know it's a diuretic, not a steroid - but typically athletes use steroids for a cycle, then utilise diuretics to flush their system in an attempt to avoid detection)

World number one foil fencer Andrea Baldini has failed a doping test and will miss the Beijing Olympics.
The Italian Olympic Committee revealed on Friday that Baldini tested positive for a banned diuretic at the European Championships in Kiev last month.
The 22-year-old had been one of Italy's top fencing medal hopes for Olympics and was tipped for the gold.
But he will be replaced in the Italian fencing squad by Andrea Cassara, says the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper

I am sure the FIE leadership is really upset. Anti-doping is a high priority of the IOC and this just makes fencing look as bad as other sports. We must keep ourselves clean to remain in the Olympics...or gain extra medals and athlete slots for additional 2 team events.
Wow, that is huge news. I'll be very curious how this plays out if the second test proves conclusive. Any thoughts on what illegal substance he was trying to hide? Could it be something other than steroids?

Absolute strength and bulk probably aren't what he was after - but there are a number of banned products the primary purpose of which is to improve recovery time between training sessions, enabling you to train harder, longer than the other guy.

Thank goodness they take that second sample, even though:
I am as strong an advocate for clean sports as anyone, but the history of these tests -- or, I should say, the poor performance of many of the labs that administer these tests (mis labeling, cross-contamination, you name it) -- with the declaration that Baldini's second sample is going to fail before the tests results come back makes an ugly stink.
However, Scarso admitted it was "99% likely" that the second test, the result of which is due early next week, would also be positive.
What's Italian for "due process" ?

I'm sure it's just a recognition that, when the second sample is tested, 99% of the time the results match those of the first sample. Simple statistics.

I don't think fencing loses anything in the eyes of the IOC from this.
No Olympic medals stripped, no one getting kicked out in the middle of the games, etc.

Cassara is European Champion, Baldini was beaten by Halsted 15-9 in the L8.
Cassara won gold in Kiev, not Baldini, although it may mean that Poland may get the gold in the team event.

It was a diuretic called Furosemide.
That drug is also used as a masking agent for other drugs.
Along with some other diuretics, furosemide is also included on the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned drug list due to its alleged use as a masking agent for other drugs. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furosemide)
